Recruit for tech or go through IB and PE and then get MBA to make the jump?
A lot of people are unable to live the 60-80 hour grind building excel models or fixing up powerpoints for their MDs and clients. I heard a lot of people exit PE to Product Management but they usually get their firm to sponsor them for an MBA and then make a switch. Would you go right for the jump into tech if you had the choice back then or still go for the grind which comes with the money?
A lot of people go into Product post-MBA but doing PE first is absolutely not a prerequisite and probably the lowest-ROI way in relative to time / effort. If you go get a job in tech now you will probably be able to make the jump sooner and just may save yourself 250k on the MBA in the process
Lol no. Comes down to what you want to do. If you want to do tech, do tech. If you are simply going to want to exit to tech after entering IB then it’s pointless doing imo. Simply because tech is not PE - it is not remotely close to being a role where you need to go to IB first to get into. Also, why on earth would you say go IB -> PE -> (MBA) -> tech? I mean if you enter IB, know you want to go to tech, why go to the PE/MBA route? Why not just exit to junior product associate roles in tech? Save yourself $250k on a “STEM” MBA that teaches nothing, why not? Look, in my humble opinion, unless you want to do PE there is no other reason to go to IB. Please don’t say prestige this is 2021 and people are recruiting for the actual roles they want to do straight out of university instead of meandering through semi-tangential experiences first.
How easy / feasible is it to go from IB to associate product roles?
Is it possible to go to product straight from IB without a tech background?
tech is harder to get into especially if you don't know how to code but IB is actually less technical if you memorized the WSO guide.
IB—>Product—>PE. Absolutely hated my time in Product at a FAANG and it was a ride to hell and back to try to recruit back into PE.
Interesting, what's it like moving from IB into product and then PE versus just move from IB into PE? Is IB -> Product easier/better than IB->PE directly?
What did you hate about product? I haven't heard many people hate it so very curious what you didn't like abou it
Also would be interested in hearing what you generally disliked about the experience in Product Management, given it seems to be a popular option for the PE >> MBA crowd that doesn’t want to stay in finance
