Recruiting Bummer: Position Put on Hold

Hi all, as I posted in my previous thread, I was waiting anxiously to hear back from an interview. I heard today from HR over email. I was told my interviews went well and were positive but the position has been put on hold temporarily.

The guys are HR are a bit incompetent and I have a tendency to come across transactional so I am wondering what is the best way to ask if they have a sense of a timeline by when the position will be re-open and if it would be ok for me to get in touch myself? Should I ask this? I am interviewing with other firms too but this firm is my top choice. However, I don't want to come across as desperate, but I also don't want to make it seem as if I have given up on this opportunity. Please provide your input.
