Recruiting Question - 5 years experience

Just got done with an hour phone interview. Recruiter says, "Well we were really looking for someone with 5 years experience doing something completely unrelated to what you do. Sorry about that!" and that's the end. Thing is, they had my resume. They can see what I did or did not do. I've been agonizing over this interview for a week and I'm a little pissed. And it's happened before! If someone doesn't want to interview me, fine, I get it. But why are they doing this to me?

Any help WSO?

Yeah HR brought me to another city to interview for a position that started in two weeks. Apparently "Graduation: May 2011" in bold italics on my resume managed to elude them!

I'm looking for a job myself, so I don't really understand the whole process. But, is it possible you just didn't interview that well? I mean, they must of been considering offering you a job if the interview went well, right? Otherwise, they wouldn't really interview you, yeah?

I guess. Maybe they were just trying to be nice by not telling me that I suck. I would wish they would just come out and say it though. Also, I got the impression that they were looking for someone with vastly different qualifications.

You guys could be right. It wasn't as egregious as the last time this happened, but whatever.

It could be both. Like the much more experienced guy (with the Eddie Murphy avatar) above said, they were probably willing to overlook your experience if you wowed them. Also, maybe they had mixed feelings about your background; hoping that your unique background would be really useful and differentiate you, but after they interviewed you they didn't feel that way.

Anyway, as far as I can tell, the interview process is incredibly random. So, don't sweat it too much. Even if they didn't like your background or interview skills, it definitely doesn't mean you couldn't do that job as well as the guy they actually give an offer to.
