Reddit Suuuuuuucks
I stopped using reddit a few months ago because I could no longer put up with the amount of political trash (both liberal and conservative) that was percolating into the few subs that I still looked at. Well, I was bored today and thought, "fuck it", I'll go see what's good on Reddit. Holy shit, what a mistake. That website has to be the most soft, woe-is-me, self congratulatory page on the whole internet - and that's saying something because I generally think most forms of social media are garbage. I know WSO is far from perfect, but damn, just 5 minutes on Reddit makes me appreciate some of the discussions on here. All jokes aside, I genuinely think there are a lot of very intelligent and insightful people on this site, and at least we can have somewhat productive conversations without being censored into oblivion.
Oh well. That's my rant. Anyone have similar experiences?
Stopped using reddit actively a long time ago. weird people, weird topics, cat pictures and videos, and more crap.
But - there is a niche subreddit for certain topics which won't be anywhere else online. For some hobbies you can indeed get some good inspiration, build plans, BOM and pictures. that can be mechanical keyboards, a new gun mod, knives or something about e-bikes or scooters. it is not complete garbage, but you'd have to know where to look for the good stuff.
Yeah the amount of privileged, college educated 20 year-olds who hate America and tell all the European redditors it's some kind of anarcho capitalist failed state where you go $5 million in debt for a broken arm is insane.
Ironically it's those whiny losers who never even worked a day in their life.
There's so many socialists on reddit its scary

Same. Stopped using Reddit a while back. Sometimes I'll go on to look at a few of the subreddits. I like the FATFire one, there are a few about PC's/gaming, but other than that reddit is hot garbage. Imagine if WSO didn't exist and we had to go on there to talk about shit.
Yeah the various FIRE ones have useful information and generally ones that I’m more interested in, but are niche so no one talks about pointless shit.
I like it for hobby type stuff, but even the more common hobbies (snowboarding, mountain biking) are absolute trash. It's great for more niche stuff, or if you want to do some research on something within a certain subreddit..like best fly fishing setup under $200..stuff like that.
What's great about it is that you can see everyone's post history. I was browsing some insane thread where this one lady wanted everything locked down and like $4k a month stipend from the gov't to live off during covid. Checked out her post history and she had a 2-year-old daughter and was heavily addicted to opiates....
One the topic of insane people, one of my good friends GF is an insufferable SJW. Grew up in Vermont and now lives in an urban area and is somehow an expert on how minorities live and all that crap (she's also semi in the closet about being bi-sexual and weirdly loves black women...obviously nothing wrong with that, and she's usually fine to hang out with regardless). She shared a video of some lunatic saying that defund the police isn't about DEFUNDING the police but to abolish it completely. She was arguing that all property should be public, capitalism is evil (duh), and if you cannot envision a world without police that you need more hope in humanity. You should have read the comments. My god. Sorry had to get the off my chest.
Wow I have a friend whose ex gf was the same way. Came over to our house once during COVID and wouldn't shut the fuck up about how "all inmates should be released" because they would get infected and die from covid.
you should have raped her to change her mind.
Sucks because I like reddit as a concept, but it is just way too much now. I still go on every now and again when I am bored (more frequently now due to covid). I think as long as you have the right subreddits in your feed its not as bad, but you have to know where to go/stay within your interests. It can be a really good place to be entertained or learn something new, but any of those main major subreddits are absolute fucking garbage and so unnecessarily politicized. The minute you head to the front page you end up in quite literally hell on earth, the hivemind is real and there is definitely some truth to the stereotypical reddit archetype.
A lot of the issue stems from how the up/down vote system works, it silences dissenting opinions and just enables the horrible groupthink on there. Also the mods of most subs tend to be losers who have nothing better to do than reinforce their opinions and troll people, rather than actually try and make a reasonable environment that isn't politicized or irrelevant to the actual purpose of the subreddit. I also think a lot of the major issues stem from some of the more polarized/radical subs on both sides getting banned, has forced people to move to more "normal" parts of reddit and it definitely changed the platform.
r/politics is the fucking worst. Always on the front page the moment I open the app
Have to admit the commentary on r/politics or r/news is entertaining at times, regardless of where you stand. But often it is full of bullshit.
you can filter it out of your r/all feed
if /r/politics is on your front page you're using reddit wrong
Overall the concept of reddit is amazing, they truly found a novel way to re-create the forum experience for all the niche stuff that didn't have a forum or place elsewhere. There are other positive outcomes on some subreddits:
- they are the main feeder for successful discord channels; this happens often for regional/city/travel subs. There is a permanent invite to their discord and they grow some quality chat rooms with this concept
- a good sub can really build & boost small businesses; I just saw how a single product review took an entire web store offline (they had so many potential customers)
- they are great for products, hobbies or areas you have no clue about, but would quickly like to change that; some good guides on there
- you can also use them as a news feed for certain niche areas (either locality or sudden emergencies, much cleaner/more direct than twitter)
For whatever reason, reddit auto subs you to "Two X Chromosomes" or whatever the fuck its called, and Jesus Christ that sub is a dumpster fire. Nearly every post is either a circle jerk about abortion, complaining about how bad men are, how society is out to get women, the list goes on. Don't believe me? Take a look at today's top posts here https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoXChromosomes/
>For whatever reason, reddit auto subs you to "Two X Chromosomes" or whatever the fuck its called, and Jesus Christ that sub is a dumpster fire.
Years ago, when I first logged on to reddit I naively went to the TwoX sub to make my first post. I had basically asked how do women want to be approached and where is the best place to meet single ladies... well, you can imagine how that went - I was accused of being every horrible thing you can think of (including being a rapist and a Nazi). Well, my overall impression of Reddit hasn't changed much and I no longer use it anymore. I did enjoy r/wallstreetbets though.
I agree; half the posts are about how someone said hi to them on the street and they said “hey yourself” and it gets 20k upvotes or just regular daily stuff and it shoots to the top because “independent strong women”.
Reddit has to be the biggest collection of miserable people on the internet. As most of this thread has mentioned, it can be decent (helpful, informative) when browsing hobby-specific subs, but anything related to news, politics etc. ranges from pure propaganda to unhinged/delusional ramblings.
Ever browse your city’s subreddit? It’s like looking at an alternate reality.
yeah +1 on the city subreddit, I checked in on my hometown's and it was like I left behind a fucking wasteland.
I follow only a few subs:
r/pugs (brings so much joy)
r/ar15 and r/ak47 (I like guns)
r/ spotted (I like cars)
r/gonewild is very cool. Lots of interesting material on that sub
simp
Never thought I'd see someone who likes both r/pugs and r/ar15
Pugs, guns, and cars. I used to have a pug who lived to be nearly 14. I just got myself a Daniel Defense DDM4V7 LW. If I wasn’t allergic I’d get another pug, but they are a ton of responsibility and expensive to keep healthy. Guns are cheaper, a lot cheaper
I think to get the most out of Reddit, you need to use it in a very specific way. I do not use it for politics, sports or really anything except for business.
That makes sense. Why use Reddit for politics when you could get the same content from your post history?
r/cfa was very useful when I prepared for the exams. Genuinely a helpful community
The thinking on reddit overall is too introverted. It always seems like communicating with people on there can be hard to change their view, or it becomes a place for people to confirm their personal views as "right", despite it being wrong or an immature stance. I will say though not every community on there is bad. The ones about hobbies that have smaller communities aren't bad. They can be useful for tips or other information to advance hobbies that are generally less harmful.
I use the app Reddit pics - it keeps me up to date with what’s going on in the world from a certain perspective. It’s pretty entertaining although it comes with a bit of filth sometimes.
Reddit default sucks. Have to customize what pages you follow otherwise it's an absolute shitshow regardless of your political affiliations.
All these comments are all so true. They manage to bring their politics into every sub that has absolutely nothing to do with politics. I downloaded it because it had info on my jet skiing hobby. I couldn’t help but to notice the amount of odd balls on there. Cat people, neck beards, mouth breathers, man children and sad sacks. From what I can gather, many of the folks on there are societal outcasts and it’s like their underground social layer. There’s all these posts on my feed talking about how they will never get girlfriends and asking each other if they are ugly or not. IM DONE, JUST DELETED!
Ah yes...the lonely, the incels and the insecure, reddit is full of them. It’s why I barely use it anymore.
On a phone, you get these trending topics, which are sometimes political. There may be a way to get rid of the alerts about trending topics. I have not noticed this issue on a desktop.
The only Reddit communities I've ever found good are r/drama and its spinoffs, but most of them are banned. They were funny because they would make fun of the most ridiculous things taking place on Reddit and on other websites, but not in a smug, agenda-ridden way.
Cope
shut up autist
Have some bussy, incel
Hold up. Yall shittin on reddit when all people do on wso is recycle the same trash IB tier lists all day? Think you just need to explore subreddits about shit you actually care about/are interested in. Though if you go on for anything banking related it wouldn’t suit your needs - hence why wso exists.
The accounting sub is surprisingly solid and the best place to talk with other people in my profession. However, it does follow WSO in some regards like students giving advice to people with working experience.
The key is to remember the average redditor is 16 years old and doesn't know shit.
No no, the key is to assume that the other person behind the monitor is a fat neckbeard that has no life lmao

I feel like Reddit went down the same rabbit hole as YouTube: once you give everyone the opportunity to make their own platform the ratio of interesting to pointless and troll level content just shrinks and shrinks until you have to literally dig through bullshit to find 2 minutes of enjoyable information. I think that’s why WSO is so nice by comparison; just because most people on here share a similar job/world position/ education so we all know what each other wants
I love reddit. I think your experience with reddit is directly correlated to how much time you take to find the subs with content you like.
I'm still trying to figure out this conservative political trash you speak of supposedly on the website
Oh my god so true lol
If people on R^ddit from, like, r/outdoors or craft-related boards say that their success is in their own hands and that they want children, to bugmales that already counts as conservative opinion, and therefore wrongthink
There’s a frightening amount of unemployed basement dwelling incels on there. That’s all I have to say. Almost everyone on there is a communist or socialist. Oh and I’m not exaggerating about the communist thing, many are self proclaimed.
Notice how they have been travelling over to WSO as of late?
Makes me lose hope in America. If gen z are even more socialist leaning than millennials then we are truly fucked
Reddit is as good or bad as you let it be IMO. Echoing what most others have said, there is some absolute dumpstire fires on most of reddit and especially on the generic front page. It's a massive echo chamber as well, and every once in a while I'm perusing and feel like I need to go for a walk to escape the madness. There is a special breed of individuals that I've only ever seen on reddit.
I've been on/off reddit as a lurker for almost a decade. I use it semi regularly and my feed is customized for everything from wallstreetbets (my favourite sub for the last 4/5 years by far) to city subreddits for places I've lived in and liked. I also sub to shit like r/halo and r/guitar to name a few. I follow sports stuff like r/skiing, r/rugbyunion and r/hockey and r/baseball, and individual team subreddits. There's some good content on the niche subreddits.
Comparing WSO and Reddit, WSO is more like a single subreddit. and let's be real here - this board is not without its own subset of trash. But reddit on average is way, way trashier. You gotta know where to look.
In my opinion, Reddit is great for getting "real" answers to questions instead of the SEO boosted quasi advertisement garbage that you get with a google search. Anytime I search a question in Google I always follow it with "Reddit" and end up with much better answers. I'm thinking of things like product reviews etc.
Agreed
Everyone is forgetting the amazing Wall Street bets subreddit here
Only use it to follow wallstreetbets and lose money trading options. The r/politics forum is an echo chamber where everyone agrees with each other and conservatives get downvoted to hell
Everything is way too much now, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit... all of these platforms are really toxic these past few months
When you say reddit what subs were you looking at?
Reddit is a joke, but then again what do you expect when 90% of the people on there look something like this.
oh my god that FUPA is horrifying
You gotta tailor it. A few subs I subscribe to that are actually useful/interesting include: r/urbanplanning, r/econmonitor, and r/badeconomics (about rebutting bad economics online). For communities I love r/truefilm because they actually have interesting conversations about movies, and r/moviescirclejerk is actually surprisingly great for having some interesting film discussions, when they're not circle jerking.
i was feeling like a disconnected old man, but glad that reddit / twtr =/= real representative opinions
Every post on reddit:
"My [29M] fiancee [28F] and I keep fighting because she doesn't agree with my plan to convert our house into a microbrewery that produces epic bacon-flavoured IPAs, am I the asshole??? I just feel she's not being very wholesome 100 keanu chungus and it really sucks."
Edit: thanks for the SB kind stranger!
"YTA - remember, Kweens can never do wrong and you must support their every decisions! Now be a good boy and do your chores, and maybe your Kween will be kind enough to let you cuddle tonight after getting hammered by her Chad boyfriend"
To me, I actually find Reddit interesting. It's full of young teens to middle aged people so it gives me a decent sample size of how people actually think at certain ages. It's not perfect, /r/politics is obviously farther left than the average American, but I do find it interesting how people think about finances, religion, and more niche subreddits. I really only use it for sports news, fatfire, and space/science though.
This biggest take away I've seen is how younger people have gravitated towards a victim complex. Maybe it's always been there, and now social media is just amplifying it, but psychologically social media has gone from a place to share what's going on in your life to a community you become a part of in order to validate who you should be blaming about everything wrong in your life.
id be very careful with assuming that is how young people actually think. I'm someone in my low twenties and the general population of reddit is FAR softer, less intelligent, and much more of a victim than the average person
I wouldn't make the generalization of all low twenties, especially ones that I work with, but at least the average younger social media user tend to fall in this bucket. Like I said, I find useful information on Reddit when I'm looking for something specific.
some of my favorites:
r/wtf r/highstrangeness r/atbge r/digitalnomad r/tihi r/asklatinamerica r/natureismetal
r/space r/meditation r/conspiracytheories r/dataisbeuatiful r/historyporn r/mapporn
Average Redditors
Yeah I agree. WSO has degraded quite a lot since when I used to be active (~2015), but it's still 10X better than Reddit. Reddit seems to attract losers who are there to justify their failures. They're eager to offer "advice" when they should be the one getting help. Unfortunately, google is too diluted with SEO marketers that it's very difficult to find anything useful anymore. At least the content is less manipulative than google.
Used to get on Reddit a lot more - disappointing to see where it is at now. You can't scroll the front page for 5 min without seeing the same cliché posts and topics repeated over an over. Its always "Men, what do you wish women understood?", "What's an unpopular opinion you agree with?" or something of that nature. I could tell you what the top comment is without looking at this point - typically something either ridiculously soft or unoriginal. Don't forget the one thousand studies all over the front page that people take as absolute truth that always just so happen to confirm some form of liberal bias (ex. COVID lockdown, legalizing hard drugs, climate apocalypse). Just go to the search bar and type in "study" and see what you get.
Tiktok > Insta > Reddit > Windows 95 > Facebook > MySpace
let's link up on aim bro
Security analysis is a good sub
Almost as good as wallstreetbets.
reddit is truly the lowest common denominator of people spewing bullshit into an echo chamber
I completely agree. Without mentioning the thousands of stupids rules present on every subreddits which make it impossible to post something, or their app which never works...
