Related - Development Associate
Hey Guys,
Any current or former Development Associates from Related have any insight on the position? I quickly searched for past threads, but didn't find much. I was hit up for the role by their HR rep. I'm a little over 2 years into IS multi-family for background. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
I would certainly proceed with caution - high turnover for that role over there
Why is that? By all accounts pay is great, obviously experience is great, long hours typically?
The culture is very political, I've heard this from ex co-workers who used to work there.
Had a buddy interview there. Related themselves described the hours as "extreme."
Now this was in NYC for the Hudson Yards project, so perhaps it an outlier versus their low income listing in LA right now, but also perhaps it isn't.
I have worked closely with Related on many deals and know many folks there. Culture and hours are rough. In NYC you can hear a pin drop in the office and they all still wear suits like its the 80s.
Interviewed there for an analyst position in the NYC office a while back and can attest to everything that's been said here. Incredibly corporate feel which took me completely aback as that's the antithesis of what you generally find in development.
Everybody I spoke to emphasized the fact that the hours were very long (which - you know it's really bad when they're up front about that in an interview). A few guys were actually pretty chill in a "I'm super-cocky but I'll take you under my wing" kind of way, a few others were some of the douchiest people I've met in my professional career (and again - red flag when that's their behavior in an interview environment). All in all the experience left a really bad taste in my mouth and was a big let-down as I had considered it a dream role for a while (maybe you can guess my alma mater).
That said, they obviously do incredible projects and they keep everything on balance sheet so if you manage to carve out a partnership stake there you'll do quite well.
This is all pretty much spot on. In terms of experience, you will be working on some of the most complex and premier projects nationwide. To be more clear on this point, you will be dealing with a nonstop barrage of constant fire drills and shitshows for years on the same deal. The amount of moving parts and things that can go wrong on these deals is absolutely wild. From an experience standpoint, if your goal is to learn how to build mega projects, the experience will be among the best you can get. The choice is whether you want to put up with the culture (very difficult people) and can somehow make it to the top rungs (which will require incredible political clout and maneuvering internally as well as a ton of sacrifice by committing your life to the job) then the end of the path there will be highly rewarding.
If this is your first job then I would by all means go for it to get the brand name on resume. 1-2 yearsat a Related and you will be golden.
However, I have heard it’s extremely corporate like others have mentioned. If you expect to go there in a development role and learn soup to nuts of the the development process, you won’t.
I appreciate all of the feedback. I met with their recruiter in a small/quieter coffee shop with a few other people around. She gave me the sales pitch. We talked about hours/comp somewhat and she proceeded to tell me that'd I'd make less and would work the same if not more hours. That pretty much wrapped up the conversation but she couldn't help herself with the last comment. "I understand. I'd have to ask the SVP in order to hire you since we recently r@ped your shop of employees so I'm not sure if she would want to hurt the relationship even more." I held myself together, but the 6 other people in close proximity did not and it got PRETTAAAAY awkward.
Their HR rep says you'll make less, work more, and then says you won't get it anyway because we've destroyed your current firm enough as is?
What an asshole.
Lmao.. maybe OP should give us an idea of who the recruiter is so we all know to never waste our time with them.
What comp did she quote you for the role? Or did you just discuss your current comp and she said it was less than that?
High quality recruiter there. What a tool.
If this is the same lady that I had the misfortune of meeting, I would not be surprised at all. The kindest description I can label her is: "vapid cunt".
Apparently, Clara moved to Howard Hughes. Good riddance to that abomination!
Not to worry! They still have HR and recruiters just as awful
Wow.. Clara. A few years ago I interviewed with her for a Development Analyst role. HR screen went great, so i take a day off to visit NYC and interview in person. We meet, she sits me down and says in a long roundabout way that this is actually an interview for an Asset Management Analyst position. Then just gets up, walks out, and leaves me with some assistant type to lead me from conference room to conference room interviewing. Insane bait and switch, most unprofessional thing that's ever happened to me. Fuck that lady and fuck Related.
