Relationship advice

I'm not in this position currently but just a question out of curiosity for those of you who were in relationships prior to accepting your IBD offer did you continue to try and maintain a long distance relationship? (assuming you moved away for your job)

How about those of you that went overseas?

In general how hard is it to maintain a steady relationship considering the long hours bankers have to work, did any of you have a serious girlfriend during your analyst stint?

lol... I am not an expert, nor do I have any prior experience, but I guess the general rule applies in this case as well. it doesnt matter whether you guys are in the same city or not. if the girl is not extremely considerate and understanding, i say good luck dude. you are not accepting a job that will allow you to hang out with her during weekends or Saint Valentine's Day...

This sums it up. It is all going to depend on how accommodating she will be...and as you've probably read, that will need to be really, really accommodating giving the hours you will work.

Personally, I would never (I don't think) end a relationship just because I was moving away. To me it's worth trying to make it work, if you care about her, and if it doesn't work out, at least you gave it a shot. But, with that said, you can't let the relationship impact your work.

Regards

Most banking relationships fail after about 3 months. That's usually how long it takes for 90% of them to die. There have been a few threads on this -- try to do a search to dig them up. I was able to make it work for two years of long distance, but it wasn't easy. It isn't about how accommodating you are, it is all about how accepting she is. So, while I'd love to say you can try hard, it will all come down to whether or not she is willing to "wait it out." My girlfriend and I waited it out and now we're back together in the same city. I've heard of other success stories, but the majority of them are failures.

this.

you can do all you want and as much as you want, but in the end if she isn't willing to work with the fact that it's your life to be called in on weekends and have your phone buzzing at 2am, that's her issue. some women just won't put up with it. find another later.

This is really interesting. I'm actually going to have the reverse situation -- I will be working (hopefully, of course) in IB in a different city while my boyfriend finishes up his last year of college. He plans to go into IB as well, however, so I think he will be plenty understanding.

Have you guys heard many stories of the reverse situation?

Hmm that should be interesting both of you working in IBD, when will you ever have time to see each other?
