REPE London Acquisitions Associate recruiting from USA

I’m a first year acquisitions analyst at a reputable REPE shop in the USA. I have an interest in REPE acquisitions in London. Ideally I’d like to work in London sooner rather than later for 2-3 years, then exit back to the USA since my long term goal is to have a career in the states.

I’m thinking an associate role in London would be ideal for my career goals. But, I’m not sure how to navigate the recruiting process/firms to target. Can anyone comment on how to do this best. Are USA based mega funds achievable (BX,KKR,Starwood, etc)? Or am I better off targeting other shops (AXA IM, Swiss Life AM, Henderson Park, etc.)?

When does associate recruiting start? (I assume London is later than NYC). Will I be at a disadvantage because I’m not local? Which acquisitions groups are the best in London right now?

Thanks for any comments.

Are you a UK citizen or resident? You have to navigate the citizenship/work-permit deal first, that will determine what options even exist. Not sure how it works in the UK, but in the US, you can intern if you are on a US student visa (i.e. in school in the US), foreign students maybe able to work for a firm based in their home country on a temp work visa, but really complex. I've heard UK not easy about this (hence the BREXIT deal).

notwithstanding that, if you really want to "round trip" this, best do with a firm with major operations in both cities (or satellite ops in UK, as that is the short term location).

In all reality,  doing these moves early in a career can actually be very difficult and even career limiting. Can lead to restarts and laterals when promotions should be on order. At mid-senior levels, whole new ballgame (and work visas much easier with an exec title as an expat).
