Research Analyst Comp - Big AM Firm
Fairly specific question.
What comp package should be expected for a Research Analyst at a large, well regarded, asset manager in Boston?
I’ve spent a few hours reading through all the posts and salary reports on this topic and I am seeing a very wide range, and most of the info is at least 4-5 years old.
I’d be coming in on the junior side and I come from a non-traditional background.
I am seeing as low as 125k base + 20% bonus and as high as 250k base + 100% bonus for someone at my level. What’s reasonable to ask for these days?
throwaway213654, bummer your thread hasn't had a response yet. Maybe one of these threads could point you in the right direction:
Or maybe the following WSO members have something to say: PaperMoney rs_1994 Zimin-Li
I hope those threads give you a bit more insight.
I can only speak to post MBA analyst positions, so adjust your expectations downward if you're moving into a senior associate or junior analyst type role.
For a large manager, typical post MBA analyst cash comp (salary+bonus) would be 200-275k first year with anything lower than 200k or higher than 300k being unusual. Many firms also offer RSUs or profit share which might add another ~50k the first year, subject to a multiyear vesting schedule.
Similar to the investment banks, large AM firms generally have pretty set pay ranges for first year analysts. If you're talking about a hedge fund the range could be much wider but subject to your performance.
Thanks for the reply.
This is a post-MBA position at a traditional AM asking for 2-4 years of buyside experience.
Sounds like $150k base + 50%ish bonus in year 1 is reasonable?
I will prolly just take whatever they offer to be honest but want to be prepared if they ask for my salary expectations.
That's probably fair. They might offer a lower salary but higher bonus range. It will also depend upon what you're making today and what type of role you're moving from especially since you mentioned that you're from a non-traditional background.
Thanks for your informative reply. I was wondering if there is any word on associate pay (straight out of ugrad) for Fidelity, Putnam, etc. Is it still 70k+10?
A few years ago that was true. It might be a bit higher today but I don't have any recent data points.
Is this 10 bonus or signing bonus? 10 bonus seems low, no?
