research team in mbb?

got an interview recently in MBB overseas office,it is an analyst position in research team, meaning most of time is not working on client side, but various reports, anyone knows what is that about? what is the possible career path then?any thoughts will be appreciated!thanks

Research in consulting firms is not to be mixed up with Research in banks, where I believe it is seen as another "Front Office" position as it is client facing. As a researcher in consulting firms, you will support the engagement teams with specific research tasks, and provide them with information they need to e.g. understand a market better, find out more about a deal, and so on. The job seems to involve a lot of skimming through databases and actually Google, and is not very analytical (e.g. you will not build models, you rather send material to consultants who then do the modelling).

The possible career path for research is research. I have not seen anyone move from there to consulting as the jobs are very different (check Linkedin if there are cases).

There's a reason it's overseas. It's not consulting-based at all: it's just to get info to the consultants more quickly. Is this for FT or summer? For summer, there is a possibility it could play well into FT MBB recruiting. For FT, stay away. I've heard there is essentially nobody who transitions from research (back office) to consultant (front office).

No, it will not help for MBA apps. I have no idea what the exit opps are, but they are likely only to other research-oriented/back-office work.

The only caveat to this is if you're talking about a research rotational program like McKinsey is known for. I'm not sure if they hire directly for this, but I know McK rotates lots of people into and out of research roles where they focus on writing and publication instead of cases for a short while. If that is the job and it eventually turns into a case-team role than it might be fine. From the looks of your post though, you're being sent off to the KnowledgeBase.

Thanaks bro, unfortuantely it is FT, it becomes quite clear it will be a totally different path that i dont like. a bit frustrated, right now some cash is quite attractive although dont know how the compensation for a back office job, maybe i should consider some second/third tier consutling company yet with real consulting experience. any wisdom ideas?

Not sure if you're living or looking overseas, but most of the US recruiting is over. It's worth making contact with some of the 2nd/3rd tier consulting firms (search this forum for the names) to see if they're still hiring, but I doubt it. After that, if you still really want consulting, contact some smaller regional firms.

It's tough to give advice without knowing your background or goals. At this point though, you pretty much have to forget about the normal path and do whatever it takes to find something for next year. I wouldn't throw away your research offer, since that is better than nothing, but if you really want front office then go for it.

I know folks from MBB research who have gone on to Wharton, MIT Sloan, Kellogg, Tuck and Chicago. I've also known folks who have gotten jobs in PE. It seems to be what you make it: you can just be a librarian and only gain researching skills, or you can be proactive and value-add to the point where you're on a project team full time.

that said, i've heard the model is being blown up and it's becoming much more of an outsource model to India and Eastern Europe. Those seem more unlikely to lead anywhere attractive vs. being based in an actual consulting office...

if you need a job, you need a job, but I would think hard about it...
