Resume critique for 1st year b-schooler please

I am a first-year MBA student coming from an entrepreneurial/consulting/project management background and seeking an internship in investment banking or private equity. I know the job market is tough, but any resume help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

some initial thoughts:

  1. spacing - I feel liker there is an entire novel on here.
  2. related to the first point your bullets are long...for example, why not cut the first bullet off after $10,000 (explain the rest in the interview)
  3. how about "Automated business processes to more accurately capture internal financial data"...instead of the long-winded bullte you have...

...i think you get the point? I like that you have a lot of "results" all over the place but there is not enough room to elaborate and or explain each one in detail (in my opinion).

overall, solid resume though. I wouldn't limit yourself to only PE and i-banking though. Here at Wharton I know several solid students that are still empty-handed after the dedicated interview period (which just passed).

Good Luck, Patrick

I am a 1st year MBA at a top 20 school with a similar background to yours, a little more experience, slightly better brand name undergrad, about equal MBA name. my BS is in EE, and I also had some sales experience.

I got an intern offer for a boutique PE firm and one for equity research at BB. I'm going to accept the research for a number of reasons which I will not go into here.

since you are trying to switch careers I would highly recommend changing your resume from a "task" format to a "skill" based format. i'd also recommend putting a strong hook on the resume that stands out such as an impressive GMAt or gpa.

so instead of saying "Managed a team of monkeys..." it would list applicable skills for the job like "Financial Modeling: Maintained revenue/booking forecast for team of monkeys..." or "Leadership: Led team of monkeys on expedition to Everest" or "Relationship Management: Developed client relationships with roving bands of apes..."

Also, I'm sure that you are aware that this is nearly the drop dead date for first year MBA internship offers. at this point you'd probably be looking at boutiques exclusively and PE may still be recruiting. You'd better have networked your ass off over the past few months so that the banks REALLY know you. and you need to leverage every single personal contact possible!

good luck!

also i would recommend adding RESULTS to each and every bullet

"developed new line of banana scented wetnaps that RESULTED in $1million of new revenue"

"introduced new software product that improved efficiency by 3x, ENABLING product to be launched 3 months early"

"whipped monkeys at work and PRODUcED three hundred percent productivity increase"
