resume for freshman undergrad
I already posted this in the resume forum, but I figure not many people will look at it there. I'm a freshman at a target school and I'm planning on sending out my resume to a few local VC's, asset management firms, and hedge funds for a summer internship. I'm not looking to get paid for this and I'm going to try to emphasize that in my cover letter. In regards to what to actually put on the resume, I have experience at a real estate fund and 2 leadership positions in college, but other than that it's all high school stuff. I did a lot in high school, so would it be better to emphasize and expand on that? Thanks for helping.
If you are still a freshman, you can definitely put yout highschool stuff on your resume.
agreed. i did the same for frosh year.
Is it a given that you'll be working for free?
Man you guys sure are focused and dedicated...I spent my freshman year focused on athletics and bangin chicks. I think your approach is commendable but do not be disheartened if you are unable to land a summer gig this year as things are very difficult as I am sure you can imagine. Nothing wrong with spending your freshman year summer doing something more enjoyable. I actually spent all of my college summers working at sports camps (making bank) and it did not have an adverse effect during post graduate recruiting. I certainly do not recommend this route and in retrospect it would have been helpful to do a summer IB prior to graduation. It was my involvement in athletics in the community that actually served as my greatest resource for networking. All the kids parents that I coached worked at HFs, IBs, etc. I guess that is the benefit of being in Newton and Fairfield County/Westchester.
Good luck.
Newton? Wtf. The only thing kids do there is tip cows and smoke pot in woods.
thanks for your help guys,
junkbondswap: You're definitely right, but I don't really have much in terms of connections, and I doubt many people in my area are involved in high finance. I'm sure I'll have fun this summer, just that there's other factors (I'm intl, etc) that would do more to harm than help me when time comes for full time job searching, so I'm trying my best to stay ahead.
What I meant in my original post was if I should spend more space describing my extra-curricular activities/leadership stuff, because as of now they're just bunched at the end in list form, and more space is devoted to embellishing/exaggerating the few extra currics i did at college this past semester.
I would probably expand on your leadership section given your age. I'm just a few years older, still in school, and had a similar situation my freshman year. Like other people said, being a freshman firms aren't expecting a perfect resume but if you can just make yourself look well rounded and focused you should be alright.
he meant newton mass (the bc area)
