Resume Review Please - New to WSO
Hi guys,
I'm new to WSO and this is my first post. I've been reading all the highly starred threads and learning about how to enter this industry. I finally wrote up a resume, and would really like to see what you think. I apologize if this is hard to read.
Here's another Private Equity Resume Review thread.
What industry are you trying to get into? There are people here that work in Consulting, Investment Banking, Private Equity, Asset Management, Sales & Trading, etc.
wow tons of cool stuff on the resume. what is "inactive secret clearance"?
Go apply to jobs at the CIA and stuff.
Pretty badass resume. I'm not really sure how firms in finance value military experience to be honest...I think its probably some of the best leadership you can have, and it shows you can follow orders and work hard. I'm sure someone else can tell you the merits of finance related experience vs. military. Regardless, appreciate all the hard work you put in for our country.
I would use a different format/template. Not a fan of those arrow bullets. The resume is not finance oriented (aside from your education), not sure how the military guys get around that or if they even have to do it. Badass resume though, I went through it twice because I was positive I would find your kill count on there.
Flake is right. You need to show how you brought value to the military via your actions and results, I mean responsibilities are nice, but how did your service and actions benefit the team you worked for? Also what relevant finance coursework have you undertaken? Finally, take out Batista and Cashier.
Gents,
First and foremost, thank you very much for taking time out of your day to review my resume and help me. Any and all feedback means something to me, as I am new to this game.
Djfiii, that's the problem: I don't know what I want to get into. I applied to an internship for wealth management at Morgan Stanley last night, since it's somewhere along the vein of what I do (I have a 20k investment portfolio that I built up over my military career). I figured the best way to figure out what I want to get into is actually start applying any and everywhere and learn as much as I can any and everywhere I go, as well as read and ask about other peoples' perspectives.
CNDdude, an inactive secret clearance is a clearance that essentially gets "disabled" since you no longer have any tasks that would require such a clearance. I got mine from DoD, and the only reason I put it on there was to demonstrate I have good character/financial standing (otherwise no clearance).
Sdeed24, I don't know how to apply it either.
Flake, I'm in the process of taking out the arrows for a new resume; someone else told me the same thing about the arrows. But you and karypto strike the heart of my issue: how WOULD I apply what I've done to finance? They are different technically, and I used a power verbs list to find words that would resonate in the finance community.
I think I will take out the Barista/Cashier part and put relevant coursework there.
