Return Offer
So, I've been working part-time in a pwm office at a BB. My boss said she wants to talk to me about next summer next week(I'm pretty sure I'm getting a return offer as I'm her favorite, always inviting me to events, etc.) She has a lot of connections in the industry and the BB is one of the best on the street. How do I tell her that I'm also interested in investment banking? How do I get her to help me land a position in the BB's ibanking office?
I'm not expecting to pursue pwm right out of college.
I was in a similar situation except I wanted S&T. I just told my boss the typical bullshit that I love the company and the culture but wanted to see all of the opportunities the bank has available to me. I think they should be happy enough that your experience there has made you a big fan of that specific bank that they should want to help you.
can you provide me with a sample dialogue or how the conversation might go? I've never been in this situation before, so I'll really appreciate your advices.
I would do something along the lines of... "Well thank you for the offer. I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed this internship. However, during my time here I have become really interested in banking. I absolutely love the culture at this bank and would love to do an SA stint here. I hope you understand that it is nothing personal, it just where my interests lie. I want to thank you again for this opporunity"
After they sit on that for a little bit, see if you can get them to recommend you to the recruiters of the bank when the time comes around. Let me know how the convo goes...
I just found out my boss has connections with the head of the BB's xyz group investment banking, managing director of the same xyz group ibd, vice presidents, and analysts of the same xyz group ibd. Shit, she knows them well too. She's gonna say "why don't you come back to us (pwm)next summer" next week and what do I say? "Thank you, but I'm looking at ibanking?" Isn't that like a slap in the face? If I say "thank you, and accept the offer", and email her after several months and ask her for a referral, isn't that even more insulting cuz im turning down his offer and ask him to refer to to other ppl?
Well (and I'm just throwing this out there), why don't you consider going to her first with your interest, rather than waiting for her to ask about PWM and then rejecting her? It might make the situation a little less awkward.
because she asked me at the beginning of my internship if I'm interested in ibanking. I said "no" cuz I didn't want her to think I'm using it as a stepping stone.
I think SpaceMonkey is right. Just approach her and mention that you have talked with your friends in the industry and it is something you are interested in. What is she going to do? Your a 20 year old kid who honestly has no clue what you really want to do.
I thought I wanted to do PWM and quickly learned that I didnt and my boss was fine with it
Just ask her casually something like: "Will I ever be able to do (insert ibanking duties)?" And follow your statement with something like I'm really interested in blah blah (modeling, comparing company value, breaking it down, etc).
She'll say NO, you don't do much of that in PWM, etc. And if she catches on she'll tell you those are ibanking duties. Then you play bashful and say: what? really i thought all ibankers did was (insert unenjoyable duty).
Then you can just dance subtly around it and ask her. If she doesn't catch on, just ask her directly: in what sort of job will I be able to do things like that? And if she doesn't say ibanking then one of two things is possible
