My advice would to be to focus your efforts on junior/internal/analyst type sales roles at larger firms who have sophisticated business development and fundraising teams. RFPs are a good way to learn the institutional world and how prospects diligence managers and products when making investment decisions, but the skill set is not transferable to a sales role. RFPs are mainly project management type work, when you want to start building out your relationship management and sales ability. Also, if you are the type of person who values shaking hands and knocking on doors, RFPs will be a tough environment. The work is very dry and mundane. You could leverage it into a BD role, but why not just start that now with your IR position.
