Rich? Good or evil

Is it wrong to want to be rich? I come from a middle income background but I want to be rich! I like money and I want to make a lot of it. And when I make my money, I want to buy nice clothes, an expensive car and a big house. Is something wrong with that?

nothing wrong with it, but realise that you can't buy your way out of unhappiness (if that's why you value those things).

i went into banking 100% on money, and that's 96% why i'm still here. but it doesn't make me happier. i have nicer clothes, but less time to see my friends (the only people i care about seeing me in them - and they don't care at all haha sadly). I have a big tv, but i watch the same crap on it. i have a big house but i do the same stuff in it i did in my student hole at uni - sit around with friends, grab a few beers, watch the game; i have less time for that stuff now.

materially i'm better off, but lifestyle wise i've definitely made a huge sacrifice to come into banking.

thus yes, obviously, it's better to be rich than poor in the abstract, but when you factor in the price of money, which at the bottom of the ladder is 95% of your waking life and 30-60% of the time you should be tucked up in bed, then you realise that it's making you no happier getting it.

that being said, i go on kick ass holidays, and everytime i'm on one of those, 5* condo deals, i'm very very glad i slaved away.

is it immoral? no. economics is the alternative to war in terms of allowing human's to get what they want (read Benjamin Constant's 1819 speech in Paris for that argument - one of my favourite texts about the valour of free economics)

good luck to you, but make sure you don't completely sacrifice those things which are currently important to your wellbeing.

Nope. There's nothing wrong with that. I want that too, but to a lesser degree.

Yes, money is the root of all evil.

I don't think money is as much of a vice as power is. As long as it's just the Benjamins you're after and you don't compromise who you are as a person and don't stoop below ethical business practices to get it, it's all good.
