Rising Junior @ Semi-Target - Please critique my MC resume

How bad is this for management consulting ?

I used the M&I resume format. Is that advisable or are there any recommended formats just for consulting ?

I'm also interested in finance jobs. Please suggest how I can spin all this when applying for finance positions.

Thank you.

Since two of your experience sections have 3 bullet points for granular detail, I would add a third bullet point on that first experience piece.

Most of your bullet points have numbers that relay results, keep this consistent across your resume.

Provided consulting services to regional manufacturing company

Be specific, what kind of consulting services? Operational? Procurement?

It wouldn't hurt to add an objective statement on the top; mention the type of consulting you're looking for and make sure any granular detail in your work experiences reflect that objective.

Thanks SocratesIsMortal.

So basically I worked for a small manufacturing company that sells over 20 kinds of jam and salsa. It was going through a expansion phase and my job was to increase sales and cut costs.

The company used to acquire the jars (in which to bottle the jam) from a whole-sale retailer. I realized that the cost of the jar alone constituted a significant part of the selling price of the jam. As a result I recommended cutting the cost of this.

I did this by connecting my firm directly with a bottle manufacturer in Asia. This way we were able to acquire the jars at a much lower cost compared to buying them from the whole-sale retailer.

^^^Is this more strategic consulting services or operational ?

I think your resume is pretty good. I have two points on formatting:

  1. 3.87/4.3 is not consistent formatting. Not sure about consulting, but this would get you dinged for IB for sure. Either 3.87/4.30 (or 4.33?) or 3.9/4.3 would be fine.

  2. Your page has something low enough on it that there is a second page attached. You do not want that second on there as it looks sloppy. Change the margins to get it to disappear and then re-save the file.

Other points: 1. People have different views on this, but I would consider taking out proficient in excel. The assumption is that you are already.

  1. Your interests and good and fairly unique in fencing, but add more! The point of interests is so that interviewers/resume reviewers can get to know you and have talking points on a personal level. If nobody in the office fences or plays violin they won't really care. Add as many as you can (shoot for 5-6 total) that are not completely generic (i.e. sports, fitness)

Overall your resume is pretty solid. Keep up the good grades and keep using resources like WSO and you should be good to go!

No problem, happy to help. As I said, your resume (GPA and Experience) is fairly strong so you should get some looks. With the formatting changes to make it more polished and a few more interests to make you stick out even more you should be good.

I am an incoming first year in IB and never recruited for or really researched consulting (hence me not commenting on the content of your bullets). To my limited knowledge in that area it sounds likes improving revenue and cutting costs is operational? Take that with a grain of salt though. I really have no idea about consulting and am only saying operational since revenue and costs drive operating profit. Sorry I cannot be of more help with your content.

Seems like you are doing a lot of things correctly and have the right attitude. Thanks for the banana and good luck!
