Rising Senior FT IBD Resume Review
Hi guys,
I was wondering if you guys would be so kind as to let me know if there's anything I can do to improve my resume. Comments about how I can rewrite certain bullets, move around certain pieces of information, formatting, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Please don't comment if you don't have anything constructive to say.
Taking a quick look:
Your formatting is on the right path, but there are some issues: add a space between each experience (to add more white space to your resume and make it more visually appealing), Increase the font size of your name, put all of your dates in month year format, and take out the "/4.0" - check out this article for a sample resume with the proper format - http://www.bankonbanking.com/resume-revisions/
You need to cut down your education bullet points: don't bold major GPA and ACT and that's it when you also list cumulative GPA, take out the Bus club in your education section and move it to the bottom, move the rest of your club stuff to the bottom as well, if the profession was good then include it in your work experience section but if not then just remove it from your resume entirely. Set up 1 line with 3 equally-spaced bullet points to list your major and cumulative GPAs and your ACT.
Some of your bullet points can be shortened and cleaned up a bit, but overall they are in pretty good shape.
You have 2 different fluency levels of mandarin listed and you have lengthy, unnecessary descriptions - keep it simple.
How'd you manage to land a BB internship with that sort of GPA? Mind PMing me or posting here? IT'd be very helpful. Thanks--your resume looks great btw.
ditto ^
BankonBanking:
Thanks for your opinions/advice.
I actually use to have all my club activities at the bottom of my resume, but I was actually suggested by a few IB professionals to move it up to my education section to take away from the focus of my bad GPA.
I thought that this advice was pretty good cause they'd see that even though I had a low GPA, I worked part time during the school year, did a part-time internship, did a double major in a hard science, and was involved in extracurricular's and did things to show my interest in IB outside of school. Additionally, I figured people may actually read GPA: 3.1 then be like "oh ok well he also did _______," but if it was at the bottom people would have probably already seen the GPA and thrown my resume out / stopped reading it carefully by the time they got to the bottom.
Please let me know what you with regards to whether you'd still think it'd be better to move it to the bottom.
Everyone else:
Surprisingly, I actually got that particular BB internship through applying online. On their online application, you could tick off multiple rotational internship programs you were interested in (and I ticked off quite a few), and even though the rotational I ended up in wasn't my among my top choices, I still managed to get an interview through going online.
My guess is that my resume was well written compared to a lot of the other kids applying and I had solid experiences for a junior (2x F500 internships + VC financial advisory internship). In fact, I actually had a chance to see some of the resumes of some of the other interns and in my opinion, even though they had better grades and still had decent experiences, my resume was by far the best written in terms of the bullets/content/formatting. I guess that you should always consider all options and try for everything/anything and don't downplay the importance of writing a good resume.
yeah my gpa was lower and I also got a MO SA gig at GS through applying online, it happens, i thought i was lucky until i met all the other interns, MO/BO positions simply arnt as competitive, if you have a decent resume/ relevant experience, and show interest it's not hard to get an interview. Just show lots of interest. Almost impossible to get something FO like this though.
It's definitely a tricky situation, but I still think your education section looks way too cluttered. While I agree that you need to take the focus off of your GPA, I would still make some changes. Additionally, when I first looked at your resume, I thought your major GPA was higher - I didn't see a 3.2, so that is my fault as I thought you had a bad cumulative, but a solid major.
That said, here are a few suggestions:
I would take out the major GPA entirely. A 3.2 isn't going to help you more than a 3.1 and without the major GPA, recruiters won't see 2 only decent GPAs, they'll only see 1. I would keep the cumulative on there and if it is a few hundredths above a 3.1, round it to a 3.2, if you are rounding.
Take off the bolding and put your ACT on the same line as your GPA
Although it could also go in skills, leave the Training the Street stuff in your education section in this case to show your interest and knowledge.
I would still move work experience either off or to the work experience section in your resume - right now you're not saying anything about it, only pretty much using it as an excuse as to why your GPA isn't better - many people work or intern part-time and still maintain high GPAs - if you didn't gain anything from it, candidacy-wise, get rid of it.
You can keep the business club in the education section, but merely state your membership and what you did, not that you were selected even though you weren't a bus. major UNLESS that selection involved a lengthy interview process or something.
Move the other clubs towards the bottom.
PM me if you have any other questions.
34+35+30+33 averaged gives 33 right? Are you not allowed to do that with ACTs? Also can i borrow the horseshoe you have up your ass to get these internships with your GPA.
Yeah it does give 33, but I never got a 33 composite score (only got 32) and I don't think I can just average my highest subscores to get a "higher" composite
