risk an offer for ib?
Hey All,
Long story short - I received a couple of FT offers this fall. Unfortunately both are in strategy consulting, which I am not interested in.
I applied to these positions because they only required a resume , and interviews turned out favorable.
I really want to break into IBD, and came up with three options:
- Accept a consulting offer -> MBA -> IBD
- Decline offers -> continue searching for FT opportunities in IBD
- Decline offers -> extend graduation -> SA -> FT IBD
My concerns are:
- Are there any FT IBD interview opportunities late fall & early spring?
- Has anyone deferred a job offer by a year?
Did some search, and it seems like people are mixed about ibd interviews late fall & early spring. But those posts were sorta outdated. Anyone have any perspective for this coming year?? I feel like some companies might delay hiring because of all the uncertainty recently.
Thanks!
take the offer
dude people kill for strategy consulting offers…take it and have a good life
Take the offer, look for IBD offer while you're working there. 3 possible scenarios arise from this:
1 - You end up loving strategy consulting. Win. 2 - You get an IBD offer and can transition over. Win. 3 - You don't get an IBD offer and don't like strategy consulting so you go to business school. Semi-win.
Isn't it too late for FT IBD anyways?
What firms/tiers of firms in strategy consulting did you receive offer from? That might influence my take, but you should probably take one of those offers and run with it.
Also, how'd you find it so easy (relatively speaking) to land offers from consulting shops while having so much trouble in the IB department?
It was harder to explain why I did not receive a FT return offer from my Summer Analyst stint in IB (even though my firm had been in the media about reducing staff) than explaining why I want to do consulting, especially after working in IB for 2 summers.
The offer I took is one of the big 4, and since I declined the other offer, it was Accenture.
WTF?
you trying to build up number of your posts? i wonder if like 1/3 is "WTF" thing..
just trying to gain respect brah.
I think taking the offer is the best. some people i know are deferring because they do not have job offers.
I think it depends on what you want to do and what company you got an offer from.
Should you give up MBB? Probably not, though I'm guessing thats not where you have offers from.
But if it's something like Accenture, I would go for IBD if you prefer IBD.
I would definitely take the offers, you have nothing to fall back on and FT recruiting for BBs is over. MM IBD and boutiques may still be hiring but there will only be a few positions and it will be fiercely competitive. Regardless of who you are, your chances are not great when a firm is only looking at hiring 1-2 people.
I would accept the offers, continue networking and try to break in once you are employed. If that does not work out, you will have a nice setup for a top MBA program as strat consultants tend to do well.
