Risk analyst salary

Hi everyone,

I am interviewing with one of the top prop trading firms in Chicago for the risk analyst position. I was asked what is my expected salary, I was able to defer it to a later stage. Curious to hear what should I say later on, since I have no clue. I come straight out of school without work experience, while the LinkedIn estimate for the job is 80k base. What would you answer...?

Thanks!

Depending on your prior experience and education, I would probably shave 5k to 10k off the base. Hopefully this firm is little more fair with you when it comes to the negotiations on this one.

HI YoungMan , 80k is a solid starting salary right after college. If the shop has meh benefits 80k may be a little low, but with a good tuition reimbursement/retirement contribution plan that you can access at an early stage, 80k is good.

Is the position in credit/market/quant risk? Also, are you coming from a target school?

Hi, Thanks for replying. The position is a market/operational risk. I am not coming from a target school. A bit concerned to ask such a high starting salary since I had previous unpleasant experience. where I asked a higher one with a different company and they rescinded the offer lol. Perhaps giving a range of 65-70 will be on the safer side? but I honestly don't know since these shops are known to pay well.....

So I'm in the DC metro (which I think is comparable wages/ cost of living to Chicago). I'll just be forward, I started at 67. Many of my colleagues who went into finance jobs after graduation were in the 63 - 73 range (this was 2017, and wages have quickly adjusted upward from there). We all went to a non-target. If you'll get good pay at this early in your career, it'll likely be in your bonus (most of the high flying numbers you see are really coming from people with a few years of experience). But everyone starts at the bottom my dude, how quickly your salary adjusts upward is based on what you can prove once you get in the door.
