Risk in NYC vs. IBD in HK?
Hello everyone. Does anyone have any thoughts on doing risk in NYC vs. doing IBD in HK? I understand that for some people this is a no brainer but I am guessing that starting one's career in the financial hub of the world (NYC) would bring him/her more prestige & experience down the road? If one starts in credit risk in a very prestigious BB, would it be easy for that person to transfer to IBD later on? If one starts in HK right after graduation, would it put him/her at a disadvantage when competing with folks from NY/London later on in the career?
Thanks a lot~!
Depends on what you want to do. There are so many paths. Depends on bank but plenty of people transfer internally divisions, geographies etc.
Answer what you want to do first, then ask again.
Or you don't know and are clueless. And that is just fine most people are clueless about what they want long term in their career. Just ask yourself what you want to do (or think you may want to do) down the line and then take it from there.
Good Luck.
Hi Jamoldo! Thanks a lot for you insights. Yeah, I am kind of clueless about what I really want to do down the road. But for the time being, I think IBD is a better fit for me than risk. From what I heard, IBD is way more intensive and demanding than risk; and I believe junior people should try to immerse themselves in a highly competitive environment and not be afraid of getting their hands dirty. Also, I see myself better off working in Asia in the long run since I am not a native speaker of English and I feel that there is indeed barriers for ESL speaker to advance in their career paths beyond VP level in the US ( I am not talking about Tech or Quant, but about IBD/AM/PE).
That being said, my long run career goal (at least for the time being) is IBD or perhaps PE and I plan to come back to Asia. My only concern right now is, should I come back to Asia for IBD right after graduation? Or should I try to work here in the US for a couple of years and then transfer back to Asia, even if the position that I have here is risk as opposed to IBD?
Thanks again for your input and I look forward to more discussion.
Risk can take you into trading and the markets side and that is plenty competitive and much more so on a day to day basis. But I understand. If you want to do banking I would suggest do it in the US first. Get training from HQ and be surrounded by higher quality people (Asia might be growing but its still a small part of business). Then you can transfer to Asia. And if need be, then you can transfer back to the US if you have played your political cards right (ie. people like you).
The tough thing in Asia is that it is much more relationship based. Who is your dad? Or Mom? Are you rich? Are your parents in government? Big time entrepreneurs/company founders? These are generally the people that make it to the top levels in Asia since they can bring the bacon. Most others have a glass ceiling and realize it way too late. This may change as markets develop. But they may not.
Good Luck

LOL. I just found that I don't have enough points to send you a message. Would you mind send me a message about your email address so that we can keep in touch? Otherwise, I'll PM you when I have enough points, haha. Hope my inquiry doesn't bother you too much. Thank you!
