Risk Management to Investment Banking
Hi everyone,
I recently received an offer at JPM in risk management as a SA' 22. My end goal is to break into IB. I may have a chance this summer to still secure a spot as I have been networking but I'm not sure. If I were to take the risk job and get on FT, does anyone have suggestions on breaking into investment banking? I have heard that some people move internally to LevFin.
capital markets groups certainly have more compliance stuff since they are producing securities (SEC spends most of their time on securities). The easiest way to get in to IB from risk will be to work for six months or so, and then try to talk to the development officer or MD in charge of the juniors for each cap markets group. Then you can apply when there is an opening. Usually, banks take laterals from other banks or their own corporate bankers. If you really understand their LOB, you'll have an ok shot. That is IF there is a lateral spot open at your bank. I don't think it will be very easy to transfer banks and move from risk to IB.
