Rolex Submariner vs GMT-Master ll
Why would someone buy a Rolex submariner over a GMT II considering value retainment and rarity? The functionality is also better with the GMT ll. So why a submariner?

When I bought my GMT in 2014 there was also a sub in the case (before these were hard to get). I tried both and I agree that the GMT was the better choice in style and function, and the price was not much higher, maybe $1,250 but I could be wrong. The GMT can do everything the average person would use a sub for (leisurely swimming, hiking, etc).
Depends on the watch. I have a sub (the black one) and absolutely love it. It was the watch that got me into watches when I was 13 so I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Also, all stainless rolexes are really hard to get rn so having a sub is a good deal in itself (my AD only has the everrose GMT
If you can find either or them new that would be a miracle on its own.
New submariners aren't hard to find? I saw one last month in blue/gold. Maybe the stainless steel are?
I meant the stainless steel ones. When people talk subs thats automatically what I think. The gold and mixed ones are easier to find.
I guess it comes down to preference. One could also argue that a sub is more discreet than a GMT, at least the new ones w/ jubilee bracelet, and might therefore be more viable as an overall daily watch that can be worn with a suit. Vintage, or even pre-ceramic, is a different ballgame though.
Maybe some people just like a submariner better? Watches are very much a personal preference item, along with depending on the amount of money that you want to spend. Personally, I have a GMT and love it but one of my best friends has a Sub and he loves his watch as well. He actually has much more money than I do (comes from a wealthy family) and the watch was a gift from his father so it has sentimental value.
in summary, it's all about preference and willingness to spend money. Both retain value well, one is just a more expensive starting point.
