SA Internship Question -- Would they know?
I'm going to be at an elite boutique this summer (Think EVR, Centerview, LAZ)....or at least I was.
Unfortuantely, there's a good chance that I may have to repeat the second semester of my junior year. I would have to do a student withdraw, assumingly no questions asked as to why (personal issues, death in family, financial issues...whateva floats your boat) This would mean taking the fall off and then coming back spring semester as a junior. Now in regards to summer plans, it seems that I'm already set to go for the internship...I don't even think anyone in my university's faculty necessarily knows I'm working as an SA. If I just attended the internship no questions asked, could I still work this summer assuming I redo the semester next year? Let's say I do a great job and get a return offer. I could just decline, again no questions asked.
Basically what I'm really asking is: Would they try hard to check and make sure I was still going into my senior year? Could I still work (I got an offer legitimately!) or is that just not going to happen, someone somehow will find out and they'll rescind it and have to go through the drugdery of finding a last-minute intern this late in the game?
A follow up question is that I COULD in theory go into senior year, IF I take a summer course. It has to be only 2-3 weeks long and meet for 20 hours total. In theory, if I just took an easy econ class where I handed in homeworks and took midterm/final, passed without ever going to a class (or taking a hit in class participation just to pass) would that be plausible? Again, the bank wouldn't know any better.
For the record this is just a worst-case triage I'm doing to see my options. Nothing is set in stone yet.
I would work the summer as if nothing happened. Don't tell them anything.
I would too, but my question is what is the probability of them finding out? The HR woman really doesn't seem like the CSI-type to go sleuthing around and figure stuff out. She can barely send an email lol.
I doubt they care, and I doubt they'll look in to it. Why do you have to take the fall off next year? If you're withdrawing this semester, and then skipping fall semester, aren't you missing a whole school year pretty much?
Super super unlikely they will find out - just don't mention it. Possibly look at taking the class, esp. if its in a couple of weeks before the internship starts.
Don't panic, relax, and don't give up your internship unnecessarily - do the internship, get the FT offer, and best case scenario you could even say you're extending your degree by a semester/year for whatever reason (shit, maybe try and go on an exchange for a semester and enjoy yourself) and just ask if you can go back to the bank as an intern again or something.

Looks like someone's wasted on a Wed night
Lol, how did that happen O_o. I would take the summer class to catch up & be in your senior year. Bank probably won't find out unless they request a final transcript during the background check
This honestly is not a troll post or anything, I'm completely sober. I would really appreciate the help of analysts in the business to weigh in, I'm not trying to be a scumbag and cheat the system or anything. I've been wanting to be an ibanker since freshman year (I have two summers finance experience, going on 3 this one) I figure in the event I do have to repeat the semester, best case scenario from that is I can work this summer and they somehow don't find out, and then give them the story that I'm staying an extra year but I'm still interested long term.
I'm also still wondering about the plausibility of taking a summer course DURING internship. I would basically need to be able to never go to a class, or go to a small fraction of them. It can't be an online course, trust me I would do that in a jif. My roommate seems to think that taking a class and interning wouldn't work whatsoever. He seems to think, with very little actual knowledge, that I would have to actually go to class and so that obviously wouldn't fly when I'm working 80 hours weeks.
can you take something like a winter class? i would honestly not say anything until the end of the internship. worst comes to worst, you can make up some bs excuse about wanting to do a minor or something.
I wouldn't take a summer class and bank on not going. Worst case scenario (which is a likely scenario) you will fail the class because you couldn't make a midterm or attendance was taken or there were pop quizzes each class you didn't know about. These are all very real possibilities, and failing a class looks pretty terrible and seriously pulls down your GPA. If you just need the credits, could you maybe do the internship for credit?
Best of luck.
Internship for credit is a good idea.
Also. you can also talk to a professor to see if you can get leeway for your attendance due to work, A guy in one of my classes who works in an F500 regional managerial type of role is allowed to be out of class for his job. He does take a penalty, but he also gets to make up work that others would probably get marked off for.

A quick question: what are you going to do if they offer FT? Since they would be assuming that you are going to be graduating, and give you an FT offer, what will you do?
P.S. I would tell them, because eventually HR will find out, and they won't be very happy.
I dont think you should tell them. If they extend a FT and they end up having beef with you staying another semester, you spend your next summer with a different firm. With a name like that on your resume it shouldn't be very tough finding another BB or EB that would be interested in you for a SA position next summer. You can easily make up a BS reason why you want to work for a different firm the following summer.
