SA or FT for MSc student
Hi Monkeys,
I am about to graduate from a non-target in an IT and management degree, but I am due to start an MSc in Finance and Investment at a target next academic year. I have a years work experience at IBM.
I'm looking for 1-2 months work experience in a Financial advisory capacity at the moment before starting my MSc, but would hope to get that secured relatively soon.
Should I be looking to get a SA role after I graduate, or would I be better suited for FT?
My only concerns are my previous grades at A-Level, which does limit my options to a few banks.
Any help or input would be appreciated,
Thanks
In the UK A-level grades seem to matter still a bit at the stage you're at. I would go for SA unless you nailed your BSc and have the MSc from a Target.
There is post somewhere on WSO, where this guys talks about getting into an EB (in London) with sub par A-levels. So I am sure it is possible but you will have to network, so start now. Apply for SAs and off-cycles. Definitely. Graduate roles are scarce in London and require at least one internship (realistically). Also what kind of A-level grades are we talking? Something to the tune of BBB? Or ABB or below that? If so, I would honestly take the GMAT and then talk about extenuating circumstances or some such. But yeah for some reason people in London are weirdly obsessed with A*....
Thanks for your response. We're looking at CCCC at A2, so a glaring issue.
I think SA will be needed, but that does also mean I could have to wait around for another year if I'm unable to turn that into a full time offer.
I have networked with industry who have told me that having a target Uni on my CV will help a great deal though.
I'm interested in this as well. Is an MSc graduate eligble for an SA internship in London?
I've just spoken to one of my contacts. They've said it is possible to do an off-cycle internship and suspend your course for 6 months - 1 year.
Suspend the masters degree? And pay tuition fees during that period? I heard off cycles are possible after graduating - i was specifically interested in SAs
Depending on the institution you may not have to pay additional fees, plus the MSc loan is added on top of your other student loans, so you only start paying it back when youre earning 22k+
