Sales/Trading vs Asset Management?

Hi All, i'm an ignorant MBA with no finance experience, looking to make the switch though. The deadlines for summer internships are approaching fast, and I was wondering if I could get some insights on the comparison between asset management/PWM VS sales/trading, if I could apply for ONLY ONE. I am in particular interested in teh following questions:

1) Which one is doing better in this market (or rather, not doing as bad) in terms of jobs available?

2) If I'm looking in Asia (ie Hong Kong, etc), which one would have more potential?

3) Which one is less technical as far as interviews? I have no finance background, and simply want to get in.

4) What are the exit opps, if any, for either one?

5) What requirements are they looking for at the MBA associate level? Is career switcher ok?

6) To further dig deeper, can someone offer insights on PWM vs Asset Management, as well as Sales vs Trading? I supposed PWM is easier than Asset Manangement, and Sales is easier than Trading right? I am not talking about difficulty of the job itself, but rather just getting the job and passing the interview without a strong finance background.

7) Which one cares less about GPA??

Thanks, much appreciated!

  1. Sales/Trading is performaning poorly in this market whereas Asset Management generally does well with consistent management fees, etc.

  2. Irrelevant

  3. Asset Management is a business built on relationships, whereas sales/trading is a business build on knowledge/analytical skills, etc. That being said, asset management has a more of a focus on interpersonal skills (ie fit).

  4. Depedning upon what you're interested in, both have exit opps. Do you like sales? If so, go Asset Management. Do you like math/risk/etc? If so, go sales/trading

  5. Not sure. Obviously a finance background is more recognized vs anything else. If you're applying without a network/contacts a non-finance background could be difficult in landing an interview, though if you have a strong resume, alternative experience will be viewed as diverse.

  6. Interview Difficulty Rank- Sales&Trading, Asset Management, PWM

  7. GPA is a qualifier. If you're able to get an interview, it is irrelevant.

The above response was terrible. Most people in AM aren't salesmen. 95% of people are working on products which all vary in the level of prestige and analytical work as well as exit ops. Both aren't letting a 3.3 in sans a few outliers.

cool, thanks for the insights guys. Feel free to elaborate, i'd like to learn as much as possible.

Also, one additional question. Is it ok to apply for more than one division at a bank (ie banking + Asset Management, or AM + S&T, or AM and PWM, etc) or is that a big no no?

Thanks.

depends on the banks policy on it. Some banks allow multi applications while others don't
