San Francisco BB Recruiting?
Hey guys,
I attend a target and was surprised that none of the BB's are recruiting full-time for their San Francisco offices. GS and MS are all new york based for banking interviews, same with CS. Ultimately I want to end up in the tech industry and thought joining a tech group out west would give me better exposure and connections than working in NY where I did BB this summer.
If I remember back to summer analyst recruiting last spring, I don't think Goldman or Morgan Stanley held interviews for those positions either. I know of one kid working at MS FSG but that was through connections.
How are these offices filling their analyst classes, do they only recruit out west? I'm guessing they only hire FT out of their summer classes.
If anyone has additional info that'd be great.
depends on which target you're at. fairly certain that those 3 have a few schools that they target themselves.
its possible that their classes are filled up too.
I might be able to help you here, I had a very relevant experience.
To your points:
In a word, yes. Doing tech banking out west is the only way to fly, except for maybe GS TMT, where the experience might be comparable. Given that one of the main reasons that tech is in San Francisco is proximity to clients, most of the top MDs in tech are out there, meaning the deals will be executed there. They do interview in SF, they probably don't recruit at your target though (where I was, the list of 'targets' was very short). No worries though, it requires some networking to get to the recruiter for that office. Since you secured a BB SA this past summer, I'm sure you can manage that.FT hiring, I'm fairly sure that CS is not doing FT recruiting this year (their summer class + deferrals should be enough for the 2010 class) while MS and GS are doing FT recruiting; also, if you widen your scope a bit, I've seen LAZ's SF office recruiting for an FT analyst as well. I'd imagine others here can provide more color on that info though.
Thanks for the insight. I'm at Wharton, but I know some firms and offices don't recruit here. You're right, networking seems to be the best avenue.
NVM. all 3 have historically recruited at Penn. It might be that their classes are filled up.
edit: note that GS never did location specific recruiting - they figure that out after first rounds
(At least) one of the banks you mentioned definitely recruits for SF at Wharton. Good luck on your networking.
My friend from CA target networked his ass off. Bankers told him that there are very few Analyst slots open on the West Coast at BB/elite/solid MM banks (low 1-digit numbers).
Stanford, Cal, and UCLA kids will fight to death for those
I always get the impression that Stanford students will have a much better time. Perhaps a misconception.
A lot of banks recruit from Stanford for NY. Cal sends students to NY also, but less recruiters visit Cal, and they have 4 times more students than Stanford.
