San Francisco: how bad has it gotten?

The city seems to be in the midst of crisis. Despite enormous wealth and power, things are falling apart. Interested to get SF residents' take on this.

-City police fail to enforce "petty" crimes such as defecation/urination in public, homeless tents, harassing people.
-Vast majority of homeless struggle with mental illness and/or drug addiction and refuse to receive treatment even when offered. They prefer being out on the streets.
-NIMBY regulations and rent control artificially limit the supply of market price housing, driving up the rent.
-California state law prevents prosecution of retail property theft if the stolen value is below $950.
-Wealthy SF residents are forced to pay for private security and patrol since the city refuses to do its job.
-New DA Chesa Boudin is a radical socialist who has said that he will not enforce most "petty" crimes and focus on reducing the prison population rather than actual law enforcement (which is the job of the DA).

Honestly, I don't know if WSO is the right forum for your political agenda - this is a finance focused website. We get it - failed liberal policy is "ruining cities" across the country (in your opinion).

Hey intern. In case you don't know, this is the "off topic" forum, which means topics that are not covered in the other threads. The off topic forum includes a plethora of topics such as dating, politics, sports, and any other issue under the sun. If this bothers you, feel free to not read it. Or, you can go cry to daddy and mommy about getting triggered by a post on WSO's off-topic forum.

1) San Fran is a potential destination many people might consider, so quality of living is worth discussing. 2) Even from a point of view of real estate discussion, the topic is still important. 3) Are you seriously calling for moderation to shut down discussions you personally do not like? You can go back to your safe space if you prefer.

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

My guy, you still haven't found irl friends to talk politics with? (joking)

I work in downtown SF, so I'll answer.

Negatives:

Homeless people are able to get away with a lot of different things and cops don't care. As a result, I've seen people shooting up in the street right across the street from hotels like the W or St Regis.

SF is so liberal, it's annoying. There's an app to pinpoint piles of human shit. There are PSAs to watch where you're walking because there could be needles.

Rent is more expensive than NYC. A 1 bedroom apartment is minimum $3k for a decent one. Luckily, Scott Wiener and other government officials are doing things to combat the problem.

Pros: A looooot of money can be made here. There are so many companies and if you get laid off, you could work for a competitor down the street.

Beautiful locations all over. The Bay Area is pretty, let's face it. Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park. You've got the Bay, Yosemite, Napa nearby. It's very close to Mountain View/Santa Clara/Sunnyvale (Silicon Valley).

The weather is absolutely amazing. The sun is shining even during winter. At worst, it'll be about 45 degrees with wind chill. There have been days in December where I've worn shorts because it's so warm.

Help me out here. I hear all of the horror stories about San Francisco, but two good friends have been to SF recently (one in Dec '18 the other in Dec '19) and both went under my dire warnings of needles and sh*t and homeless and property crime. Both--both of them--came back, to my amazement, to report that the city was not just clean and beautiful, but my gay friend said it was so incredible that he wants to move there. Neither reported seeing so much as a needle or human feces. This is different than the reports from my friends who have been to or moved to LA, who say the weather is perfect but the city is atrocious.

Are the horror stories exaggerated or do tourists just see different parts of the city? I'm genuinely confused about this.

Honestly, most of the bad things happen by FiDi and the central business districts (by Market Street and Civic Center). Once you go out to the residential areas, it gets a lot better. Parts of the city are really nice and people try their best to keep it clean.

As to why your gay friend wants to move there, he probably went to the castro or Haight Ashbury. SF is such a liberal place and everyone is accepted, sexuality is welcomed with open arms. (Look at the Folsom Street fair, but be warned).

SF is trying to make strides to clean itself up, but it's a broken city with archaic zoning laws and a rising gap between rich and poor.

I personally love the city because it's got so much to do, lots of culture, and Golden Gate Park is our equivalent to Central Park. The weather is really good most of the year and it doesn't snow, plus you're a few hours from the beach, mountains, and wine country.
