I am a senior at a non target hoping to get into management consulting in the future. Currently I am taking classes to get certified with SAP. Is this certificate worth getting if I am interested in management/strategy consulting rather than IT consulting??

Why are you wasting your time on SAP... This is what my fresh off the boat Indian cousins who don't have college degrees get to put food on the table. Don't put SAP anywhere on your resume if you want to do Strategy / Management consulting.
Depends of where you want to work. Some places that do "management consulting" would like it such as Infosys, Cognizant and other firms in their practice areas, and no, I am not talking about IT implementation

Are you saying that your resume looks worse with SAP experience for strategy consulting compared to not having it all? I was under the impression it would have no effect to a slight positive effect depending on the company, I don't understand how it will hurt to add more knowledge bases to your resume.
I am very surprised that you guys think it might actually hurt me. Some people have suggested that I move into an IT/SAP consulting role at a firm that also has strategy consulting (big4, Accenture, etc.) and lateral into strategy consulting. What do you guys think about that?
You people are actually wrong and talking about things you've no idea about. I am at an MBB, and it so happens that right now I'm working on a project where my databases/SQL skills are very useful to the entire team, cause we have to get a shitload of data from the client's SAP. And being able to do numerous complex queries ourselves without having to deal (explain/wait/whatever) with the clients IT saves A LOT of time and effort, which are the most important resources.
Also being proficient with stuff like this (even if its just MS Access with its QBE) is extremely helpful when you have to analyze huge amounts of data, that Excel is just unable to process. Or when the data is from different sources and you just can't work with it until you match it by some attribute. Good luck doing it manually.
I'm at an MBB too, and yes it can be useful once you start working. That could be said about any kind of technical certificates. The question, however, seemed to be geared towards recruiting (at least the way I understood it). And it'd add nothing to your profile for my firm's recruiting team.
I agree that database skills bring value. But he's not talking about using Access or SQL - this is SAP implementation work that has little to no value.
Putting SAP certificate on your resume tells a firm you've devoted your education to learning how to implement SAP which has no value in strategy. It's a turn off.
Personally, I feel it is a fine line. As Qayin noted there are times when having those skills can be invaluable to a team. And for getting into the strategy/ops part of firms, it may be a strength. I would think MBB may me more interested in it as a skill booster, whereas the Big 4 / Accenture may use it to relegate you to the SAP teams. And do not expect to lateral out of the SAP group easily, there are very different skills and cultures in my experience between these groups and our other more traditional management consultant groups.
That being said, ERP groups are in huge demand and if you can learn to manage large IT projects you will have the world as your oyster. Probably more global options than even MBB in terms of demand for your skills.
