SC GOP Debate

Hey monkeys,

I didn't get a chance to see the SC debate last night. I think this site is a great place for a collision of ideas, so let's use this as kind of an open thread.

For those who saw it, what were your thoughts after watching?

And for those interested in Bain Capital, I found this article fun to read. A 1987 Fortune article on Bain's consulting style. Check it out:

http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2012/01/15/…

I saw the whole thing. Here are my thoughts.

  1. Newt was on FIRE. His answer to Juan Williams' not so subtle attempt to bring up the race card, was awesome. Newt emphatically drove home the point that conservatives value hard work and individual responsibility while the liberals believe in perpetual government handouts. I also thought he was very solid on foreign policy, a sharp contrast to ron paul's meandering kooky nonsense on the issue. Newt will most likely see a bounce in south carolina after this performance.

  2. This was Romney's worst debate. He got hammered hard by newt and santorum. And his answer on releasing his tax records was painful to watch. He did recover afterwards, but overall, i thought it exposed some vulnerabilities.

The crowd was insane. They cheered for literally everything Gingrich said, and when Paul mentioned the golden rule of treating others the way you would want to be treated, they booed. Pretty disgusting.

Also, Romney said would have signed the NDAA. Can't make this shit up.

Ron Paul said that the U.S. should have consulted with Pakistan and subsequently arrested bin laden. I think it's safe to say that if Paul were president, bin laden and a bunch of other top al qaeda leaders would still be alive and well. His foreign policy comments last night reminded me why Paul cannot be trusted with the awesome powers of commander-in-chief.

If Ron Paul were president, they would have all been killed in Torah Borah 10 years ago. Remember, they all were waiting to martyr themselves when GWB sent in mercenaries instead of the full-brunt of the marines corp.

Agreed on Romney's performance. Looked pretty weak in his answers and got owned by Santorum on the voting rights of felons topic (albeit a pretty irrelevant subject). He continually fails to come off as a normal person.

Paul gets asked a question every once in a blue moon, so he can't spout ideological nonsense like the "golden rule" or leaving meaningless wars too often. Good job, Fox News! (sarcasm). That said, Paul is still too shaky for me on foreign policy aspects involving terrorists, etc. He's clearly not going to be the nominee, which for me is simultaneously a shame and a relief.

Santorum and Gingrich were my winners, I feel like they can make the SC primary a single-digit victory for Romney, or at least lower his percentage below 30.

Perry is a complete clown that pandered to the redneck audience all night with his jingoistic language. His remark on Turkey being ruled by "Islamic terrorists" was hysterical. I also don't think Perry any more details about what the Dodd-Frank Act is, beyond that it deals with "financial regulations". Hopefully Perry will leave after his fifth-place finish (assuming Stephen Colbert can't make a last-second grab for the ballot).

The debate lastnight left a bad taste in my mouth.

Romney looked like a clown once again, however his poll numbers still really aren't waivering. It's beyond me how Republicans still think he's going to win against Obama..

Newt did well, but that was to be expected with the SC crowd which favors him. We have all known Newt is a good debater with solid ideas.. it's the skeletons in the closet that worry people about him.

Paul didn't really do anything differently this time around, except the crowd was a bunch of blood thirsty bigots. When Paul talked of bringing our troops back and not getting into other wars, the crowd booed. And then Newt simply says, 'Kill Them' and they cheered like ravenous pigs. I'd like to see all of last night's crowd's children put on the front lines when we goto Iran and see if they still want to cheer when their kids are sent back in a coffin.

Utterly disgusting.

Fox's "debate" last night was the most biased I have ever seen...Paul had a huge second place finish in NH but was still put in the farthest corner of the stage where he was asked like four questions.

I laughed out loud when Gingrich yelled "kill them all" when speaking about America's enemies and the crowd roared like the fucking Roman mob. It was similarly comical to see Newt get owned by Romney for trying to call him out on super PAC ads.
