Schools with MS in Real Estate

Hi All,
I'm applying to Cornell's MPS in Real Estate and CUNY Baruch's MS in Real Estate programs for the Fall 2010 semester. It seems like Cornell's program is better as its a two year program and you get the benefit of networking with high powered alumni. But I like Baruch's program because its only 1 year and its in the heart of NYC. I'm ruling out the NYU and Columbia programs as my GMAT's gonna come in low at around 600, and they don't offer financial aid. Baruch is cheap and Cornell provides tuition assistance and other scholarships.

Besides the programs mentioned above, does anyone know of other MS R/E programs I'd might want to consider looking at?

Thank you

Doesn't Cornell do a MBA MSRE joint program? That would really be your best bet. Keep in mind that many firms will want you to have both eventually anyway.

The MSRE will open up a few job opportunities, but an MBA with a real estate concentration or a joint program will open up far more. If you just want an MSRE to start I would go with a 1 year program.

I actually have my MBA already. I got my MBA from a tier 2 school and have been working in equipment financing for the past 10 years. I thought my MBA would give me somewhat of an advantage of just getting into the program. They look for at least 5 years of work experience, so I've got that covered. Sounds like since I already have the MBA that the MS would be highly beneficial to me. It's a complete career change but I think that what I've learned having worked at bank equipment leasing divisions will help even more. Thanks for the advice.

hmmmm i have done a little research on MS RE programs, i was thinking about going back to school to get a MS in RE. in my opinion, the two most comprehensive programs were USC's MRED and MIT's MSRED, and the top 4 being MIT, USC, Cornell, and then Columbia (in order). to be frank, these are the ONLY programs i would consider. i majored in real estate in undergrad at USC, and our curriculum was more comprehensive than most schools that offer a MS in RE, except for the 4 i just mentioned.

you've got some things working against you. you already have an MBA and substantial work exp in an unrelated field. i am assuming you are 30-35 years old? to do what you want to do you (break into re with a ms in re) you would have to start your career all over again. i dont know why you would want to do that...

if i were you, i would stick to what i was doing.

btw, here id a good discussion on MS RE programs:

To mr1234....Thanks for the information. I appreciate it. The Cornell program website shows some class profile info and it seems like I'd be a little above the average range in terms of age and work experience. True, I'm 36 and have 10 years of good experience but what I'm doing is not for me any longer. I'd probably come out of school right where I want to be and that's ok with me. Starting over for me would be a good thing, plus, I have more of a passion for RE than anything that I'm doing now. I don't see myself progressing any further in my career and wouldn't want to either. Long story short, I feel I've overstayed my welcome and its time to get out.

I'll check out the other programs you mention. Thanks again.

I am currently considering NYU or Columbia for their respective MSRE or MSRED programs. However, I am a tax accountant at a NYC Big 4 accounting firm in the Real Estate tax department and almost have my CPA. I have nearly 4 years here with the same public accounting firm and they have offered to pay FULL TUITION to either program should I get in. However, I'm not sure if my RE tax background makes me marketable enough with an MSRE or MSRED to land a good RE finance job after graduation. I can't decide if I should get the MSRE/MSRED or if I should go get my MS in Taxation and stay in the accounting field even though RE finance and development interests me more. I just don't want to be stuck with a MSRE/MSRED that it took me 2.5 years (part-time) to get and not have any ability to get a good job in NYC in RE finance. In that case I should get my MS in Taxation instead.........I'm at a crossroad and need to decide.....any input???
