Best PE Firms For Associate to Partner Path

I was wondering if anyone knows which firms are likely to keep their associates for the partner path. I am sure this is subject on A. If they have an MBA or not B. Individual Performance/Likeability.

I would imagine there are some firms from LMM to MF that seek associates who want to stay in private equity for the long term. Curious if anyone can chime in on the topic?

Bump interested as well. Also are there any PE firms that don't require an MBA to advance from associate level?

First, you're going to need to narrow your criteria. I can't speak to different firms but if you're interested in solely MF/UMM that'd be one conversation, same with LMM or MM. All 4 levels are completely different. Start by narrowing down by size (and better if you do industry and/or geography too) and then look up firms that meet your criteria and look up their senior associate/VP backgrounds. There are plenty of firms that promote internally you just have to figure out everything else first.

The fact that you think there is a cut and dry “type” of firm that does this is pretty indicative of a severe misunderstanding of how PE (or quite literally any business) works. You make partner when you become irreplaceable to the firm or can offer substantial value to the partnership in a way that the PE firm cannot forgo. That applies to every private equity firm, regardless of size.

In terms of “partner path,” yes some funds do churn associate classes more than others, but no fund is going to ignore a talented junior that has potential with the firm. In my opinion, it’s better to start thinking about your future not as a strict path (as people on the forum obsess about) but more as a series of steps that cumulatively make you a valuable professional.

Yeah, it's not like there's a list of PE funds that will promote every incoming associate to partner. Like everything else in life, the answer is "it depends."

You could start at a lower middle market fund after a hot first fundraise only for the firm to realize it needs more mid levels halfway through your associate stint and bring on three new VPs. Suddenly there's no room for advancement. Conversely, you could be an associate at KKR and principal in your group could leave, opening up a direct promotion opportunity. In any case, it's impossible to generalize and plan this far ahead. Just take whatever decent offer you get, work hard, and things will work themselves out.
