Second thoughts on potential offer
So long story short, I've gone through 3 rounds of interviews for a strategy/planning role with a firm as an experienced hire.
The day after my final interview, the recruiter called to tell me she heard everything went great, and I they would like to set up a dinner with myself & some of the people I interviewed with. She also asked me to send over official pay verification, references ect.
I'm assuming I'm either a final candidate or they are preparing an offer. The issue is, I've recently begun to believe that the role is no longer the best fit for me relative to another opportunity. I'm not 100% sure I would decline the offer but it's a definite possibility.
My question is, should I see this through to a final offer given how far I've come, and should I attend the dinner? I'm not sure what the purpose of the dinner is other than to maybe get a personal feel for the candidate. The MD of the group, who I interviewed with, will be attending. I guess I would feel sort of guilty if I end up declining and wasting his time.
Thoughts?
Doesn't hurt to go. Even if you turn the offer down in the end, it's free dinner and good practice for networking with a senior person in a social setting.
Go through with it, don't worry about 'wasting' their time. When firms are hiring they know it's part of the game. Hopefully you go, they offer, and you decide it is what you want. If not, you got a free meal and you're not left with the feeling of 'what if'.
