Seeking job advice from WSO
Hey all, I became a Canadian Permanent Resident lately, and I'll like to consult everyone here for the best way to job search in Canada from abroad. I think the best way to organize my post is by using bullet points so here goes:
-
I'll like to move to Canada from Hong Kong next year. I have 2+ years of work experience in Real Estate, and I'll like to go into Asset Management using this experience. From what I've heard, I'll be starting from scratch without Canadian work experience, so I'm not surprised to start from entry level again. I am facing, however, a classic catch-22 situation: it's hard for me to get a job in Canada from abroad as employers prefer hiring local, but it's very risky to move to Canada without a job lined up. Thus,

My idea is to resolve this impasse by pursuing a 2nd Master's (with a co-op option) in Canada. The hope is to use Canadian education and work experience to boost my chances at getting a first job. I didn't say Master's in Real Estate because I'm open to switching industries. Based on my research, accounting might open more doors than real estate, so I'm wondering if I should do an MAcc/become a CPA instead? Luckily, I'm a PR so I can pay local tuition rates and borrow student loans from the govt for further education. I suppose real estate work experience and a CPA position me better for Asset Mgmt roles anyway?

I'm sharing the dropbox link (https://bit.ly/35P6XLt) to my CV so that I don't have to get long-winded explaining my background. I'm on mobile so the CV's format is messed up; sorry about that. A few things to note about my CV: Firstly, my education points to me entering govt work, and I was indeed planning to work for the govt. I was unable to naturalize in the US, however, and moved on to work in real estate instead. Secondly, my current firm has offices in Canada, yes, but HR there hasn't been responsive or helpful with my inquiry for a potential transfer. This is likely due to weak links between the Asian and Canadian branches. Thus, I can't count on a transfer. Thirdly, I recently got reassigned from Leasing to Research so my new title is Research Analyst. I haven't started the new role though so I can't put it in the CV yet.
For now, I plan on going to Toronto or Vancouver as I heard they have better support systems for newcomers. Not considering Montreal as I can't speak French. The quality of advice here has always been superb and I welcome all of your suggestions, advice, criticisms, etc.

Hope that helps.
