Seeking P/T Evening NYC IB Job
Hello All,
I joined the WSO yesterday, Nov 8, 2017. I've no IB industry experience but want a job working part time during the evenings. I already have a full time job working at a large university in NYC for 20 years. I've degrees in Psychology (BA), Accounting (BS) and Psychology (MA). I'm good with numbers and data. My current position involves working with a College Dean in overseeing administration, operations, facilities, and budgets. I also work p/t at a large retail establishment on the weekends. Hence, I'm a hard worker. Had my sights set on IB for many years but never got into it yet the desire still remains. Can anyone help?
Thanks, Michael
Hi Michael,
Glad you asked, welcome to the friendly board! I have some great advice for you:
Utilize your school's on campus recruiting. Since you go to Fordham (I can tell because Columbia psychology majors cant read and because NYU degrees are awarded as "15% interest rate in [subject]" also you sound catholic) make sure to go to their recruiting events and eat the free food/sign up for the OCR website. They probably can't even tell you aren't a student. Since you work with the dean, ask him to enroll you as a senior and do you a solid.
Cold-call / email SVPs and MDs. No point in talking to people who can't give you a job. If these high ups like you, they almost always offer you a position without even having you interview.
Make your LinkedIn profile work for YOU. People don't like the normal, ugly, lame LinkedIn profiles they often see. Make sure to include any businesses you founded, and give yourself the proper title of CEO. List all your current positions as "Outgoing [title]" to let them know you're serious about IB. Set a new title for yourself such as "disruptor," "visionary," or "game-changer."
Talk about your IB related hobbies to people when you cold-call them. Make sure you've explained how you make a living day trading and how you're currently overqualified to work in IB. They snatch up day traders like it's nothing. Remember when interviewing for an IB analyst position, talk about how its always been your passion to trade stocks professionally.
Sell all your Nike tennis gear. Lloyd Blankfein wears birddogs to board meetings.
Good luck breaking into IB!
