Selling item for heft sum - Guy wants to pay with Cashiers Check

I have sold an item on Ebay for a substantial amount of money. The buyer is flying into town to pick the item up himself. He wants to bring a cashiers check. The buyer will be flying in after banks close, so I wont be able to call a bank to verify the check.

Is their anyway to tell if this check is fake or not? I have a good feeling that it is all fine because he is coming in face to face, but I have heard horror stories of guys getting shafted and are responsible for the money 2 / 3 weeks after you deposit it and the bank finds out its fake.

Any advice? Could I suggest another form of payment from him to get by tomorrow that would make it for sure legit?

Do you know what bank's cashiers check he will be paying with? If so, you can easily google the check verification number and call them. It's an automated system where you'll enter the check number and amount and it'll tell you if the check is legit or not. If not, most checks do have security features on them that you can look for. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Would a cashiers check have his info on it at all? It seemed fishy to me because the guy said he was a physician, but his English and writing were horrendous. It reminded me of the Nigerian Prince emails. He was middle eastern, so that could explain the horrible writing/English but typically a US physician wouldn't lack skills in English writing.

Western Union would do the trick wouldnt it? Just have him send the money to one of the agent locations?

DO NOT accept a cashiers check, esp if this is a high amount. this sounds like a scam, make the dude pay cash

Shady as fuck. Don't give into it, make him pay the way normal fucking people pay.

agree with alexpasch and short. check his rating, ask to meet in a public location, only except cash or paypal. if you have to ask, the answer is no. don't take chances with transactions like this.

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

Just show up with a large dude in a tight black tshirt under his all black, poorly tailored suit and explain to him that Sergei will be escorting him to the bank to make sure everything checks out.
