Semi-Target with 3.7 GPA and 3 Internships - No First Round Interviews
I attend a Semi-Target in PA and I've been applying like crazy over the past 2-3 months. I've probably applied to over 40 SA 2021 jobs, and the only interviews I've gotten were the Hirevues given to everyone, and that has only been from like 4 firms. I have 3 finance internships, 4 leadership roles on my resume, I can speak 3 languages, and I have a 3.7 GPA with a double major and a minor. I've been trying to network as well but most people don't offer to push my resume up. I would love to know if there is something wrong with my resume or I'm just not doing something right. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
Perhaps your school is actually a non-target and not a semi (CMU if i had to assume)
Also 3 finance internships doing what? You’re a rising junior and summer internships have barely started I’d have to assume those internships are pretty bs. Also while 3 languages is a good skill to have no-one really cares during interviews most MDs are white old men who can only speak english.
Also you need to ask after your networking calls. Whether its pushing your resume, connecting to someone new. Of course if the call sucked and there was no connection don’t bother.
Not CMU. Think Penn State/Lehigh/Swarthmore. The only reason I have my internships is because I started building my resume back in high school. I'm technically a rising sophomore but I skipped a year because of my credits so I will be a rising junior. Even with a lack of networking, that shouldn't be enough reason to get dinged without even getting to first round interviews I thought.
Sorry to break it to you but all 3 are non targets (have two buddies in IB penn state/Swarthmore) both tell me the recruiting isn’t good
Second, no offense but a 3.7 with internships isn’t that impressive. While you might think your resume is good trust me there are loads of 3.9+ applicants from other non-targets with probably as equal internship experience as you (also its quality > quantity for internships)
You really should realize that there is no chance that you’ll be getting interviews without networking. Go read Sil’s networking guide on wso good luck
Edit: also noone cares about credits I had enough credit to graduate in 3 years myself but ppl effectively view you as a rising sophomore perhaps another big reason why you arent getting interviews
Red Flag
2nd Red FlagHuge red flag
Not burst your bubble but Penn State is not on the same level as Swarthmore, its dumb to compare the two. That said, you should chillout, firms wanna see a human not a robot.
Tf what semi target is in PA
Penn State? Villanova?
and Carnegie Mellon
I typed out a giant response, but ultimately it all boiled down to this - you needed to network. I don't know if it's too late or not, but for any banks that haven't yet started recruiting, probably a decent amount of MMs, you need to start grinding and contacting as many people as you can. Don't expect them to offer to bump your resume, ask for it. Don't be afraid to be pushy. Also, target VP+ people, because they can expedite your application to the top of the pile.
Are you in the Nittany Lion Fund?
It's rough out there. I was in a similar position from a semi target. I only did ~3 first rounds out of probably ~70 applications, and one of those was just because it was OCR; granted I withdrew quite a few that were still in process once I got an offer.
CMU is a semi-target
lol you’re at Swarthmore aren’t you bro
