Sending out recruiting emails

I am in the middle of the investment banking recruiting process and I was wondering about this:

When the company is getting back to candidates after reviewing their applications, do they send the rejection emails out first or do they send candidates they want to invite for an interview an email first?

I imagine they would taste the better candidates first and keep the "waitlisted" or fringe candidates just in case. Rejection letters typically do not come out immediately, sometimes waaay after you submitted-with some exceptions of course.

Unless banks are certain you don't meet the criteria they won't just immediately deny the app, although there may be a low chance of converting to an interview; they should first email the strongest candidates and deny the lowest percentile candidates. Then as the herd slims and job prospects get taken up, deny the fringe candidates.

Haven't you considered that your resumes look different? Depending on how you write your bullets, what you choose to highlight, the language you use, your "candidacy" (how likely you are to be hired) can be significantly different despite having the same titles or clubs, being at the same school, and having high GPAs.
