Serious Legal Trouble

I made a stupid mistake tonight. I was caught at a bar underage and I had a drink in my hand. I got a ticket for a city ordinance ONLY. I asked the officer and he said this WAS NOT a misdemeanor or a felony. This was just a ticket that was paid to the city, he said, and I quote, “this is just like a parking ticket.” I asked several times if employers/future internships could see this and he only gave me vague answers.

I am wondering if this will appear on my background check or if this will appear on my record. Will companies be able to see this? I have signed for an internship for summer 2019 and I am worried that the offer may be taken away because of this.

I realize this was a stupid mistake. I take 100% of the blame. I am just wondering if anyone has dealt with this before? I am definitely willing to PM people. I am just very worried. Thank you.

Relax, just take a few shots. But seriously, What's happened has happened, try to make it good as much as use can. Also above all take a lesson to do things on a more good/legally compliant side, maybe. Just my 2 cents. Thanks

Im not saying its not a disqualifier but jesus, at some point the hiring managers have to have some empathy. 95% of people drank alcohol prior to hitting the legal age (Im part of the 5% that didnt, but I wouldnt give a shit).

"Serious legal trouble", calm down, you would be in serious legal trouble if you were caught murdering someone. I doubt anyone would revoke an offer because of the equivalent of a parking ticket.

To infinity... and beyond!

Perfunctory:
Man. I was totally expecting something else based on the title.

Op, breathe. It's going to be ok.

Yeah, was expecting a juicy felony story. No dice

This stuff can come up just FYI, but it shouldn't matter unless you rack up a couple because then you start to come across as potentially having a problem.

I had an underage in college that I went through a 1st time offender program where my school had a deal with the local police. I was not supposed to have any record, but the instance still triggered a flag on a background check nearly 10 years later. I hadn't disclosed it because it had not triggered previous background checks in the past so it was kind of a shock. Literally was a 30 second conversation though when it came up.

with a title like this, I was expecting gun charges, a kilo of blow, racketeering, insider trading, etc.

chill out, speaking from experience, hire a lawyer, see if you can get it dropped for community service. it will show up on a check, but you admit NOTHING until you get hired, and then you tell them right before the check (I was in college, I was drinking, I'm more responsible now and this won't affect my performance).

people drink in college, no one cares unless you're applying at Mormon Capital

Guessing this is a troll comment. If not, you're fine. This type of stuff doesn't come up until after you've accepted an offer and they're running a background check.

You’re fine. They way the questions are worded on the background checks are around misdemeanor and felony convictions and possibly arrests for each of those. They don’t ask about minor civil offenses that result in tickets. Just don’t lie, and don’t bring it up if not asked.

Many people have gotten through the recruiting process and received offers with much worse things on their record (e.g. DWI). The sky is not falling. Calm down.

The only reason you would maybe get dinged if you were asked in your application about arrests/convictions, you said no, and it comes up in a background check. And in that situation you get dinged for being dishonest, not breaking the law. Since it seemed like this happened well after you filled out your app, you're going to be ok.

I got a very similar ticket - they also said "This is just like a parking ticket" - and no employer has ever cared.

The underage drinking ticket that screws you is for a fake ID - but this ticket is NOT that. Pay it, forget about it. When employers do background checks they want to make you have no felonies or drug/theft related charges. you're good.
