SF Rent and Neighborhoods for First Year
Hi! I'll be working in SF and wanted to see where to live and how much to pay for rent. Is it unreasonable to expect a 1BR apartment or a studio in a decent location for 2k?
Rent here seems ridiculous even for an IB analyst.
2K sounds about right.
2k sounds low for a good location with 1 bedroom, If you had roommates that’s definitely doable though. 2500-3,000 is probably more reasonable if you’re set on not having roommates, a good location, and not a total shit-hole.
2K will get you a studio around the tenderloin area which you should avoid (it's the one not gentrified area in SF and can be dodgy). I'd pony up to 22-2300 and find something in nob hill or north beach. Yes SF rent is more expensive than NYC.
how much do you think it is for a nice place in the marina?
Getting your own place will be tough at that price point. Renting a room will run $1500 on average. Neighborhoodwise, If you aren't bringing a car, I would really recommend North Beach. Dope culture here, awesome foods + bars, and a 15 minute walk to FiDi.
Russian Hill is also nice but you would need a car.
How much would you guess that it would cost to live in North Beach? Also is North Beach better than Marina?
Whats the pros/cons for each??
Both neighborhoods are probably around the same amount for a room. Anywhere from ~$1000 for a closet under some stairs to $2000 for a large room in a nice place.
North Beach - Great Italian and Chinese food around. Lots of history and has a very "authentic" feel compared to many other SF neighborhoods. There's some pretty fun bars here and your are a 15 minute, fairly flat walk to work in FiDi
Marina - Also great food spots. Much younger crowd in general and is generally known as where all of the fresh college grads go to party. Lots of hot girls out there. This is where me and my friends go out most of the time on weekends. Biggest downside compared to North Beach is that you have to drive/take public transport to work as it's like an hour long + hilly walk to FiDi.
I would recommend living in North Beach personally but both are fun areas. Marina is just a bit more party oriented.
