Hello,
I am starting an IB internship in May that has the potential to turn into a full time offer. What kind of shirts should I be looking to buy? Can anyone recommend a few brands ( max $150 per shit), collars typesand fits that are appropriate for the office? Also, what kind of tie knots are typically used these days. I'm a student and completely clueless. However, I would like to make a good impression on the job (apart from the actual work being done).

Shirts: Charles Tyrwhitt, Thomas Pink, Brooks Brothers - your focus should be on quality material and make sure you get some collar stays Colors: Solid white, solid shades of blues, checks are fine and stripes are fine (conservative colors) Ties: Same brands above or just go to a department store and pick some up Go half-windsor.
Do yourself a favor and get nice shoes: Allen Edmonds, Cole Hahn and Johnston & Murphy all work (leather bottom, no rubber). Get black and/or brown.

The best way to make a good impression dress-wise is not to stand out, either for being too trendy, too obviously expensive, or too shabby in your wardrobe. You can get good quality for less than $150. These should be between $50-$80: Brooks Brothers-not the slimmest fit but classic in style and solid quality; nice classic ties. Charles Tyrwhitt-more stylish than BB and much slimmer, I personally find the quality a shade below Brooks. Don't go overboard on the French cuffs.
Collars, anything not too extreme on either end of the spectrum is fine (button-down depends on if you will need to wear a tie most of the time or not).
If you WANT to spend more (in the $150 range), you have a lot of nice brands to choose from, but I don't really recommend it for your whole shirt lineup-get a few nice ones that can cross-over between office and casual occasions (subtle stripe, solid blue, classy patterns like a check that isn't too obnoxious, etc.)
Here are a few things to look for in a shirt:
*I don't know what a jib is, but make sure he likes the cut of yours.

^ You forgot to mention contrast collars. You ever wonder why Bud Fox wanted to be Gordon Gekko? It was all about the collar. Also, tie colour = bright red. The reason Gekko went to jail was because his ties weren't bright enough; clear case of a fashion crime that caught up to him.
ps A jib is a type of sail. Few new employees know this, but all top-tier analysts are given one to wear as a cape around the office to demonstrate their superiority. Weather permitting, they generally skip the shirt entirely, going with just cape, collar and tie, a la Chippendales. You can make a bang-on first impression by showing up on your first day dressed like that; it radiates success.

I was told it "douchey" for an analyst (FT) to wear contrasting collars, i'm fine and can deal with that. But does it matter the spread on your collar? Like I don't like button down collar, I typically like mine really wide spread, as far as even the collars that go straight across like (http://bit.ly/eFTEbS), do you think any1 would give a shxt?
They were kidding about the contrasting collars, which are terrible. Wide spread collars are fine. Button down collars are too casual IMO.
I prefer button down collars for business casual. Don't like spread collars without a tie and with the top button undone.

well if you gonna point him to watch tv then I gotta say - watch white collar, both Neal and Peter dress really good imo. some of it might be too flashy but overall I really really like that show and their wardrobe :)
Button down collars are too casual for business. They're the sort of thing you wear to a barbecue, not the office. If your office has casual Fridays, they might be ok then, but definitely not as normal wear. What if you have to put on a tie for a client meeting?
How spread your collar is should really be a function of your face. What knot you wear is a function of how spread your collar is.

Second of all:
You'd be hard pressed to find dress shirts at Brooks Brothers that are too flashy for the office, provided you don't buy Black Fleece (which is great for more casual settings but can be a bit much for work). That collar is fine, BB doesn't even carry really wide spread collars, believe me I've looked.

Are white, black, light/dark blue shirts good enough? What color ties do you guys wear with these color shirts? Not really a big fan of big patterns, so I'm just trying to go with a solid color shirt and a solid color tie. Is it too mundane?

Shirt: light blue or white.
Suit: Navy or charcoal. Avoid too visible patterns.
Tie: foulard or repp, dark color of any kind except black. If you are interviewing with anyone from the UK, ditch the repp unless you belong to the corresponding regiment or the school.
Shoes: black and shined.

Black shirt is fine. Preferably with a silver or black tie and white Alfani shoes.

There's nothing wrong with a black shirt and a grey suit.
Black or dark suit & a white of light shirt with a decent tie, although the tie should be 'normal' and not too flashy. If you wear a black suit white shirt, you can choose basically any type of color for your tie because it'll match.
Black shirts can be worn without a tie, but need to be accompanied by a blazer - a black shirt alone or with a tie (don't ever embarrass your MD/team with a silver tie) looks like the wart inside a fat girl's ass.

What is so hard about wearing a white or light blue shirt with a solid navy/gray 2 button suit and conservative pattern tie?
Don't try and over complicate this: if you already are employed you can get away with almost anything. If you are trying to get a job, keep it simple. White or blue shirt with a red or light blue solid color tie.
I always wear a blue shirt. Always
Navy suit, properly fitted. White shirt. Monogram on left, above waist, preferably in subtle grey lettering. Hermes tie. Make sure the shirt is double cuffed, no pocket.
Black lace up shoes. Nothing with a square toe or pointed toe.
