Shooting myself in the foot by switching to Biometry and Statistics?
I'm a rising sophomore in Cornell in AEM. I'm contemplating a change to Cornell's Biometry and Stats major with a minor in AEM (Cornell won't let me change in A&S to study in their statistics major). From what I can tell, Cornell's biometry and stats major has the same coursework as A&S's stats.
Part of my reason is, I find a business major pretty useless and too technical for my taste. Also, I've lately become interested in prop trading firms, and I'm hoping that a statistics background with advanced math coursework would aid me in my pursuit of these firms. From what I understand, most prop trading firms don't like business majors too much.
Am I shooting myself in the foot by leaving AEM?
Doesn't biometry and stats in the ag school prepare you to be an actuary? How about a straight math major? Is that A&S as well?
umm well coursework is exactly the same as A&S stats. everything is crosslisted.
Math major is also in A&S. However, the way I've planned out the rest of college, I would basically be double majoring in math and statistics.
I guess bottom line is that if you can pass the brainteaser interviews, you can work at a good prop shop. Will Cornell in your resume, you should get interviews (and I know some do OCR there). Any major that teaches you how to think probabilistically will be okay.
Thanks you so much for the help. Silver bananas.
Just an FYI, AEM is probably the best major at Cornell for finance (in terms of the minute amount of work it requires and the opportunities they get). Arts has requirements out the ass, and B&S is pretty intense. Make sure that's the actual path you want before you commit to it. You're about to be a sophomore, there's more opportunities to internally transfer.
Nope. I'm only a rising sophomore because I'm graduating a year late because of some personal circumstances. Should I just double in AEM and stats if I wanna go into prop trading?
Your major doesn't matter that much, because you're at Cornell. I have friends who aren't even in AEM and are going to top boutiques/BBs. However, with that said, AEM offers A LOT of upper level finance courses that can prepare you very well for IB/S&T/etc... so I think you should think twice before switching majors, since there are A LOT of people at Cornell who want to get into AEM.
my major reason for wanting to trade is because i really wanna do prop trading after college. and from what i can see, most prop trading firms recruiting at cornell want math/stats/engineering majors.
