Shoreditch vs Elephant & Castle
Curious what you guys are thinking about this.
Would you rather move into a fantastic, highly attractive looking flatshare in Elephant & Castle (ticks all ambience/optical boxes). Problem is that the room is small and I probably won't be able to fit an adequate desk into it and might have to set up my WFH gear in the living room. I've heard mixed things about the area but it'll be close to the station within one of the extremely new developments. No red flags regarding the flatmates. How nice is the area?
Or into a noticeably less attractive but still nice studio in Shoreditch. Enough space for all I need + great location. I like the vibe in that area as well! Unsure how living alone will be like as I've only done flatshare so far.
Both feel like an upgrade from my student shack!
Other considerations: Which place wins regarding getting home late in the night (long day at work, after a night out with friends), nice cafes/bars/restaurants close by (not having to hop onto the tube to meet people at a nice place would be great).
Currently deciding between both. Same price and very affordable for me. Only visited London briefly so far and haven't lived there yet. Working in Canary Wharf but would hate to live too close to it and I'm very cool with the respective time spent on commuting :)
Honestly a personal preference thing, Shoreditch is a much better area imo, but it seems like you’ve got a better spot in Elephant and Castle. You need to decide what matters more to you.
Correct! Just hard to assess how things really are as I won't have an opportunity to visit them before signing....
Another thing to note is that I think Shoreditch is better connected. It would be roughly 10min less commute and I know that switching lines is not so bad with this option. Also for visiting the rest of London, for example, to meet people living a bit more in the west. Elephant & Castle seems to be trickier/longer. Is that correct?
E&C is one of those places which can be comfortably described as a shithole. Go north.
faced literally the same situation, but ended-up moving in Shoreditch.
The only benefit of E&C is that the flats (one-bedroom in my case) are often new/modern/bright and have decent value for money. You get for £1,500 ~55sqm + balcony. The Elephant park is actually pretty nice and gives a glimpse on how the (overall) area might look in 5-10 years, yet, as everything is being build, the vibe is still in its nascency.
On the other hand, I love Shoreditch for its bars/restaurants and people (in contrast to E&C....), you have the Spitalfield market/Brick lane. In terms of rooms (and vis-a-vis E&C), the value for money is worse and you wont get the same quality as in E&C. Prices per sqm are also higher.
Ultimately, I found at Aldgate (East) the apartment characteristics of E&C (xx th floor, bright, balcony with a view) near the vibe of Spitalfield.
Transportation are at both locations good. Shoreditch (if near Liverpool Street) slightly better.
At the end, you need to decide what you priorities are: value for money, vibes, nightlife, share vs 1-bed room.
Honestly don't get a studio in London, none of them are ever good. Just live with mates and enjoy the extra living space it gets you. Virtually everyone I know (mid 20s) is living with other people regardless of how much they're making.
