Is it beneficial to include a short description of a company on your resume if it is small?
For example, I am currently interning at a small ABL hedge fund that most people probably haven't heard of outside the ABL world. Is it common to include a description under the company name/position, or just highlight it throughout the bullet points?
What is the common thing to do in this situation?

I've seen it done both ways.
Whatever method you use make sure you highlight its AUM and its strategy
Personally I prefer the SHORT description method
Example:
"Name of Firm", long/short equity hedge fund with $8.5 bn AUM
- Describe your duties
- Describe your duties
- Describe your duties
You can also work a company description into a bullet point.
For example:
ABC Investments
- Analyzed xyz sector for a long/short equity hedge fund with $x AUM

Thanks guys.
I'd personally rather see Clueless Wanderer's approach over mwgr5's. Your first bullet seems pretty awkward if you use it to describe the firm and give an accomplishment.

when is it appropriate to add a company description on resume (Originally Posted: 06/01/2014)
Hello,
I have some experience the titles of which are not self explanatory. Would it be appropriate to add a company description to those? or does the review only care about my role in it and not about what the company does?
thanks
short answer: never.
I don't know if never is the answer. If you have experience at small firms or consultants that may still be quality but relatively unknown (I know a few asset managers that fly completely under the radar but still have decent programs and AUM) it may be worth a short description of the firm. You obviously don't have to say what GS does but when it's a no-name it's helpful as the person reading the resume to not have to search for it and figure out what the firm is. If it's something about your specific title at the firm and what you specifically did, you should be able to describe that in the bullets.
I did an internship at the corporate banking div. of a bank. The responsibilities of the corp banking division varies among banks. Would it be appropriate to mention the services provided by the division I interned in? (providing advisory services on DCM, derivatives and trade finance)
