Short Nike with Kaepernick announcement?

From objective standpoint, how could alienating 50% of the country be a good thing for sales over the next year or two? Its no doubt retail has bottomed for the time being and nike's stock itself has done well, but do we see an impact in sales from this announcement? Enough to make a impact on the stock? Is anyone shorting on the news? What do you think?

And on the personal side, i hope he never sets foot in a NFL game again. There are over a million cops in America protecting us. Just because a handful choose to do the wrong thing, doesn't mean the whole country should be in uproar. there is plenty to blame on every every race when it comes to crooked cops. And at the end of the day, if a cop tells you to do something, or you threaten them, their gunna do their job! If you resist, you get dealt with force and go to jail, its simple. Society has rules for a reason. Kaepernick wore socks on the field with cops dressed as Pigs being killed. Your out of your mind to defend that. So long Nike from my wardrobe.

I’ll buy Nike because I like the shoes but fuck them.

I’m sorry, but how is this ad campaign good for business? Piss off a large portion of people who hate this guy for what? Social cred?

I stopped watching Ballers because they couldn’t stop putting political shirts on the show. Maybe some people want just something without politics.

Hollywood and a lot of companies have forgotten the profit motive. When they forget it, I’m gone.

Kap was on the downward slide of his career and made a stance. He’s probably richer from this trash.

Trump needs to launch a human rights investigation against Nike. Break their back.

Net-net, it could drive business.

I think with this move Nike will net more buyers than sellers. Nike sponsored athletes have had/done controversial things in the past, but they keep selling. I don't think people will stop buying Nike shoes strictly because of this, but people might start to buy Nike's strictly because of this. Trumps a wildcard though, so who knows.

I'm sure Nike has conducted their research on this campaign, they know what they are doing. It's somewhat of a Buffet stock though, it has a large moat. Yes adidas, skechers/under armour, but kids want to wear Nike.

However, I do think it's definitely running a little too long and as gotten out of hand. I hear all this stuff about Colin Kap (and others) and how they are SJW, but I don't get what they really do. I'm not staying they are completely wrong, but show we some stats, is it really that bad? Pointing your finger, drawing attention to yourself, giving a random speech, what are these guys really doing to contribute to helping what they perceive as the problem.

Alienating 50% or more means nothing when those people don't buy shoes anyways.

The people mad buy a pair of shoes once every 2 years, the people happy buy a shoe every month. It could alienate 75% of the field, still in the money.

Politics is so fucking annoying. I hate how jf you do or don't wear, you have a stance. I have two pairs of Nikes, I ain't throwing shit out cause they're still good pairs. Doesnt mean I'm pro Kap. Just means I'm logical.

Takes a stance against specifically police brutality, suddenly it’s apparent to 50% of the country that all police must fit this description.

Bill Burr said it best, 9/11 happened and out of nowhere these people want to talk about police officers and firefighters being the greatest people.

I don’t necessarily agree with Kap, but the first amendment protects his free speech. Republicans/conservatives/so called “right” touts the constitution and used to uphold it, but like the dems on the left, everything is politicized.

And Nielsen has shown that Nike actually knows its demographic. Can’t believe everything Trump believes and thinks is now the norm amongst “50% of the population”. How does one man think for so many people?

Nike has identified 8 cities around the world that are expected to account for 80% of their growth through 2020. These are all large global cities not the red parts of America. Making a few republicans in flyover country mad doesn’t matter, these aren’t the people Nike is targeting.

Look, a condescending Canadian. Much easier to find one than an actual republican who really gives a shit about this.

Signed, an actual republican who doesn’t give a shit about this. Kap wears a Che shirt, why should I care about him?

Also, your entire country is flyover country, prick.

You guys are out of your minds if you think Nike is even CLOSE to losing 50% of their customers. They have ran every single possible scenario both good and bad, i'm sure. Whether they care about Kap or not, this is a genius idea to keep the brand even more relevant. Doesn't matter what you think about it, its about what the KIDS are buying/want their parents to buy them. Kids will still buy Jordans, Nike jerseys, and of course Lebron shoes. For every 100 rednecks out there burning their shoes, there's PROFESSIONAL athletes promoting this ad and making it cool.

Also the only brand even close behind Nike is Adidas, not UA. Doesn't matter if UA has every all star in every sport, coming from someone young, they simply are not cool.

Agreed. Lets be real they're "losing" customers that are stupid enough to burn apparel that they ALREADY BOUGHT and then record it and post it as a big "F you" to Nike. Well let's do the math here. If you were seriously upset you would have presumably burned all of your apparel. So either: A) You only had one piece of Nike apparel, in which case Nike doesn't care about you as a customer because you're not even a drop in the ocean of their sales. B) You burned that one piece of apparel and you own much more which means you're threats are half-hearted and you just burned your shit for "Internet Clout". C) You burned that one item for "Internet Clout" and plan to keep the rest, meaning you're not as mad as you think you are or that perhaps they DID lose a relatively Valuable customer. But for every (C) person there are probably 3 or 4 customers that will increase spending on Nike apparel because they like / agree / support the Ad and Kap.

Let's not forget what burning clothing means--which is important stuff like LeBron going to another team.

Everyone wants to point at the ~5% of people (we all know them, on facebook, etc). who continue to fan the flames of the situation and give him attention ... I acknowledge I am not a Trump fan, but I don't know any other right-of-center people like myself who say anything more than, "yeah screw him" and move on. But it's outrage porn and makes for good news.

Two thoughts: 1. Jesus, why post this on WSO..... 2. As someone who works in marketing (at a major CPG), I wish we could have/had done this. It's absolutely brilliant. Do you have any idea of the media value they just generated (and will continue to generate) with this? I saw one count that they had the equivalent of $50MM of free media coverage on day 1. The saying "all publicity is good publicity" is ~80% right. Second, people are going to forget about a lot of the politics surrounding this, and what's going to stick in their heads is the brand. Third, most people don't make buying decisions based on politics (for or against) - and this just put Nike top of mind for just about everyone in America. Buying out the whole Superbowl ad inventory probably wouldn't get that for a company.

1) I do not care about how Nike chooses to market. I like their products, not their political stances. I will continue to purchase their superior products until I find a new brand whose product I like better

2) Why corporations feel the need to weigh in on these issues in these situations is beyond me. I do not care about Nike's political leanings, I just want my gear to function well at a reasonable price point. Think about it in this light, how does this ad campaign affect you on a day to day basis? it doesn't. Are people going to label you a hero for wearing Nike? no. No one cares. Wear what products you like, and don't wear what products you don't.

3) Kap is either a complete idiot or a genius. He was protesting for these shootings to be investigated by the federal government. Obama and another member of the federal govt (cannot remember) were already doing this at this time. This is the equivalent of saying I am going to protest McDonald for not serving breakfast all day, and the manager comes out and says oh hey great protest, but we already serve breakfast all day. I think, maybe, Kap was smart because he realized his skills and value in the NFL were diminishing so he pulled this stunt to become relevant outside of football and get sponsorship deals like the huge contract he just signed with Nike. They are paying him millions/year for this ad campaign

4) what gets lost in this in my opinion is that Kap took a knee instead of sitting to be respectful to the military. He met with with a military member and they decided a knee was more respectful. But he also said Cuba has more freedom for citizens than the US and police are modern day slave catchers, neither of which I will agree with, so split there

5) From a business perspective, you have to be dumb to not think that Nike didn't sit around in a room and discussed this ad campaign and ran projections to find out if it would be profitable or not. They know their target audience and projections better than you, so this should in theory be successful. And if you agree put your money where your mouth is and long the stock. Think this is dumb? Short it. That is what is great about our system, put your money behind your theories and gain from it.

6) I aim to get it right, not be right. Do I think this is a great idea by Nike? No. Do I think it will cut their sales in half? no. I own some Nike stock in my portfolio. I am holding as of now. We will know the answer to this in 1 year, 2 years, even 5 years from now. Will make a fantastic case study, but to say I have a great idea as to how this will affect sales I am not sure, so I will watch it play out as an investor and as a consumer.

7) Just read a comment here about social injustices. Look. Statistically the world has never been safer, things have never been more equal under the law for all races and sexes, and the world has never been better. The media outrage that is generated today by any event is ridiculous and they have people thinking the world is so dangerous and sexism and racism are everywhere in society. You are more likely to be killed by a wasp, bee, than be shot by a cop if you are unarmed. Statistically that is a fact. And if America was really systemically racist in favor of white people, do you think Asian men would be the highest wage earners in this country? Going to take a wild guess and say no. Do some people have more privilege and a better chance of success? yes. Is it fair? no. Just the way it is. Can't go back in time and change it. Can only move forward.

/Rant

Nike's "underdog" campaign is nothing new. People need to be angry about something so they choose this. I lean right on most issues, but its odd that the people complaining about Nike and Kap are the same people that look the other way when they voted for a draft dodger and someone who insults POW's.

I don't know if you shorted Nike yet, but they've gained back the dip they had and some.

Ill say the same thing about this issue as I did for the Kylie Jenner "self-made billionaire" Forbes article. If old white dudes are talking about it at all (the former a printed article in the era of digital media, the latter an apparel company in an era of white label products), it was already a successful campaign.

As for everything else, it seems like everyone with a keyboard and internet connection seems to feel some type of way about Kap, the NFL, the Police, and society as a whole, I kind of just feel apathy towards it all which sucks bc these are real issues that need to be dealt with. I guess I don't know that there is even a "right" answer to even be found, as the issues are about the sentiments of a society at large which you cant really legislate. I cant feel the glare of someone following me around a store/ rejecting my application bc I have a hard to pronounce name / or assuming my skin color makes me inferior. Conversely I have no idea what its like to have to make a split second decision as to whether on not I need to use lethal force to stop an assailant and make sure I get home tonight (all while making way less than 6 figures a year). I cant realistically know how these things would cause me to react so, I cant do anything but take both sides at face value save for any really obvious falsehoods, and that blows real hard. I guess I'm thankful that that is where we are as a society, it's not the global violence, famine or plague that kills us. Now the battles are waged within our minds and souls and somehow it's both better and worse.

This is an important point. When ancient minds thought up democracy, society, civil life, etc., they were mostly and probably referring to a homogeneous landscape. They didn't think about these silos of people, composed of different walks of life. I think this is where the idealist nut jobs come up with an "ethnostate".

But it's not a good idea, as even in the particular case with Kap, it's not ethnicity or race driving the contention, it's the police versus those encountering the police.

Even as people are reverting back to time of old, which the threat being that we enter back into a world that led to WWII, we know that it can't work. The only thing to do is to start expanding our perception of what society should be. We saw the failures of WWII, so we know how it will end. We do need to think about other walks and how they might be affected, not just for them, but to keep ourselves out of some heinous violence.
