Should i call and ask why after a rejection??

I applied for off-cycle internship with a BB in the AM division and reached the telephone interview stage but got rejected. I spoke to a partner who connected me with the HR representative before my application and they encouraged me to apply. I received my rejection e-mail yesterday but I thought my telephone interview went ok.

Should I call and ask why I got rejected? Or should I email the MD and ask him if he possibly knowns why?

This was for an alternative asset team which I did not have any experience in. But in terms of university and background, I would say that I am a fairly competitive candidate.

I have been in touch with the recruiter for the team and have just sent him an email asking for feedback. Would you recommend I email the MD and thank him for his support and ask if there are any opportunities in the future?

I've politely done this after rejections, and have either gotten no response or just the boiler plate language ("these roles are very competitive" etc.). If you truly aced every technical question, then it simply came down to the behaviorals and how they thought you'd fit in the group.
