Should I do this...?
Just a little help, I have an opportunity intern with Metlife Investments' Alternative Investments group in either Capital Markets or FOF hedge fund work. My ultimate goal is to work in a hedge fund and I come from a non target with a decent Regional Ugrad B school very close to NYC.
My questions is will this help?
How is compensation and lifestyle?
Chances on a top 15 MBA afterwards?
BTW Im a sophmore with a 3.4gpa in Econ
If you have nothing else, take it, it can only help. If you have other offers, please post, as more information is needed
Thats the only offer I have. Its tough for a sophmore coming from a non target
I have a feeling of deja vu. I think I responded to you, or someone very similar to you about this exact subject. I'm going to assume you've searched the recent posts and understand the difference between Hedge FOF and HFs. To answer your questions...
Will it help? Yes. Would an internship in IBD/ER/S&T help more? You bet.
Compensation & lifestyle? would be surprised if you made more than $60k base. Can't comment on lifestyle... presumably better than IBD.
Top 15 MBA? Sure why not.
If you have nothing else, take it and learn as much as you can about the different funds.
Yea im the guy you responded to. When we spoke it was an opportunity and now its a reality. Ive done research and all signs point to 70-80k all in. does that sound realistic? 10-20k bonus
It's a good offer, take it and go work in FOF, that will prep you better for HF because you'll see a lot of different fund strategies.
Working in the FOF group will be a good experience. Considering you are only a sophomore, it isn't crucial that you work in IBD this summer. Having some sort of finance internship is significantly more important for someone at your stage in the game. I worked at an FOF this past summer and learned a great deal about the hedge fund space. You will get exposed to a lot of different strategies and get a hold on how hedge fund PM's think about the market.
Thanks for the insight I was thinking similarly as far as the experience as a sophmore internship. I could use this opportunity to leverage myself into IBD something better. The Metlife situation is also geared towards retention so they hiring sophmore interns with the expectation on keeping them through graduation so thats a decent fall back if nothing else. But as long as the compensation is good (i know it will be less than ibd) then im all good until B school. Im if i can get 80-100k all in then its a no brainer because of the lifestyle.
As a Sophmore internship that's an awesome spot to land.
I have heard the hours at Metlife Investments are cushy compared to IB and that it's very family friendly.
Why are you looking at FT compensation when you are a sophomore summer analyst? The point is to leverage the experience into another position as a junior (unless you fall in love with the company/type of work).
The reason why is because my program is geared toward staying with the company through graduation. I plan to use this as leverage forg a better position but if I can use this as a good back up up then why not? FOF compensation is not as obviously and discussed as everything else which is why imma asking.
what does capital markets do? i would avoid fof.
