Should I name drop ex-employee in cover letter?

So I networked with someone, and she was a highly regarded person at this firm I want to apply to. She forwarded my resume to HR, but I still need to formally apply through their website. I wanted to talk a little bit about what she told me about the firm's work culture, but I don't know if I should explicitly name her. But then again, I'm not sure if I should go for something like "After networking with a previous employee, I learned that Firm X is A B C".

Opinions would be much appreciated!

If that person is as influential as you're saying, your cover letter probably doesn't matter that much. You'll get the interview regardless (unless you don't pass the min reqs possibly). You can do whatever is more comfortable. Also, be sure to send that person a message when you apply. (At least that's what I've been told to do in the past)

msft:
Thanks! Should I explicitly name him/her, or leave it anonymous?

I would leave it anonymous, she did her part and opened the door. Now you do your part and convince HR you belong there. If you get the job thank her for pushing your resume.

Mention it. If she had a problem with you mentioning your name, she's probably wouldn't have forwarded your resume. That being said, ask her first.
