Should I stay or leave the current group?

  • I really like the team but not the business... Came to a realization that I didn’t do much diligence before accepting the offer and just overly estimated my interest in this sector, plus the deal flow isn’t great. And now I really want to switch back to real estate...

  • Should I bring this up during the year end review to see if there is any chance for an internal transfer or just start recruiting for REPE roles at other funds?

  • Should I stay in the group till the 2 year mark?

I have been really lost and any advice would be extremely helpful. Thank you!

1) Are you at Brookfield?

2/3) How long have you been at the firm? If it's a year, do not bring this up in your review. You'll basically show them you were a wasted hire. Try to network with analysts/associates on the RE team and try to get a foot in the door that way. If this was your 2nd year review, then I would have a different response.

4) Wtf is this all about? You don't like the position, want to change teams, but you are looking for a promotion?? Maybe I am missing something, but why do you even deserve one? Don't assume you're ever guaranteed a promotion. Or are you chasing a "prestigious" title to tell your IB friends? Don't worry about your title in RE, compensation is the only thing that matters. At my fund, we have 28-30 year old analysts who are (were) taking home $300k+. I don't think they give a shit that their title is "analyst".
