Should I take interview offer?
I have recently been offered an Analyst position at a no-name boutique investment bank, but also have an option to interview at a well known middle market investment bank through a contact of mine. Now my concern is that I may not get the mid-market ibank gig (I have no prior IB experience, and this position requires someone with experience, but due to networking I was able to get the interview). As a result, I don't want to ruin my relationship with my contact that I have at the bank (he is one of the partners).
What I am thinking is to accept the no-name boutique ibank offer, and get in touch with my contact at the mid-market ibank after a year or so to lateral. By then I should have sufficient experience to talk about during an interview. Right now, even though it would seem I have nothing to lose since I already have an offer, I do risk ruining the relationship at the MM if I don't do well in the interview. Like, why would my contact be willing to help me out later on if I don't do well in the interview right now?
Anyway, just need suggestions, should I take up on the offer to interview or just say thank you, but I will take the no name and will keep in touch in the future...
take the job, but do the interview anyway. if they offer at the larger bank tell the smaller bank thanks for the opportunity
You're overthinking it buddy - take any interviews you get, if you get offers consider the next step
Taking an interview could never hurt
Did you lie to the partner to get him to offer you an interview? Also if you're serious about moving over there anyway after working at the no-name boutique it would be best to stay in contact with him every few months rather than out of the blue a year later trying to hit him up for something when you've done nothing to maintain contact with him.
if no exploding date on your offer, take the interview and hold out as long as you can. tell the mm bank you're interviewing with about your other offer (builds credibility and puts sense of urgency on their decision)
Thanks guys, I already got the interview date set for Monday. As for the the no-name boutique, they want me to start as soon as possible to cover for an Analyst who had just left (haven't received the official letter in writing so don't know when they want it by) but I will try to hold out as long as I can. Acronymous, I do plan on informing the MM about my offer, in order to expedite the process if anything. And Olafenizer, no I did not lie to the partner to get an interview.
