Should I take this job on campus?

So theres a student-run online bookstore at my university (target), and they are looking for someone to apply for the "Director of Finance" position. Since 2005, the company has "generated over $300,000 in revenue for its affiliates and donated $25,000 to local charities and student groups."

As Director of Finance my job would be to "maintain accurate and detailed financial records of the company balance sheet and income statement, executing cash disbursements to charity and student groups, and working with the Chief Financial Officer to ensure proper accounting practices."

This sounds like a nice gig for my resume, and it says the time commitment is about 3-5 hours a week... but im already involved in some serious ECs which take up a lot of time as it is, and i cant really drop any of them because im already committed to them (three positions, to be exact). Not to mention that I will be working part time at Morningstar during the fall, 10-15 hrs a week.

Do you guys think this job is worth it? Will it be something that makes me stand out on my resume and something that will be impressive in interviews? I know, I know i shouldn't just think of it in terms of whats impressive to firms, but i would enjoy it anyway and I think its a cool job, I'm just deciding whether or not its really worth it. Let me know what you guys think

If you're looking to go into iBanking, they probably wouldn't even care. That is, because your GPA (~3.0) is severely below the normal cut-off. Just constructive advice, but work on your GPA for now.

Morningstar? Let me guess, some Northwestern chump (even UChicago freshmen have better things to do).

Target? You have got to be kidding me on that, have you seen the 2008 ranking of that school? It's a fucking shithshow. Reminds me Miami University (Ohio) in the 80s.

Trust me, I know, I didn't end up in BB because I listened to the lies that they feed there to their students. I transferred to Yale after spending a useless 'quarter' there, another sign that it was just a big high school.

If you are looking into anything trading or ibanking related, don't even waste your time with that kind of a background -- Morningstar (ha), "Director of Finance" (aren't you all at that school?), and NU. By the time you are eligible to apply, Northwestern will be rounding out against division III schools, which your athletic program already is.

But then again, Mr. Director, if you looking to make it your full-time job after graduating, then by all means, knock yourself out.

what's up your ass today, youre usually quite tame.

you transferred from NU to yale after only one quarter, didnt make it into a BB, and now youre blaming your northwestern education?

im the first freshman to have this position at morningstar, every other freshman i know is either doing PWM, making copies, working at the mall, or some other crappy unpaid gig. i recently spoke with a senior associate in M&A at lehman (a Northwestern alum, btw) who was impressed with my experience at Morningstar and said he would recommend me for an ER job for next summer. not bad for a sophomore?

as far as rankings go, yes this year was a huge disappointment, despite that our acceptance rate dropped 6 percent. but "shitshow" isnt the term i would use for a school that stayed in the same spot as last year. UChicago accepts 40% of applicants yet it is tied with Columbia for #9, makes no sense me to me. i know acceptance rate isnt everything, but selectivity is pretty important if you ask me. but last i checked we are tied with Brown and one spot under Cornell (for the first time), and many spots ahead of Berkeley. These three are all considered targets, so dont act like USNews rankings have anything to do with ibanking recruitment.

am I saying that Northwestern is the best school in the country? absolutely not, but its a respectable school that sends many students to ibanking at BB and boutiques every year. and having a top 5 business school on campus sure as hell doesnt hurt.

dont bitch at me just because your dumb ass couldnt take advantage of the amazing opportunity of going to Yale and didnt get into a BB. a northwestern econ/engineer with a 3.5+ and decent experience is a shoe-in at any boutique or even chicago BBs. looks like youre no better than the "Northwestern chumps."

and as for our athletic program, yeah our basketball team sucks, but our football team made it to a bowl game two years ago and had the Big 10 Freshman of the Year runningback Tyrell Sutton. and then our coach died last year. cut us some slack. plus we're the only private school in the Big 10. do you seriously think any of the ivies/top private schools have a chance against NU football team?

You sound like a bunch of morons. Northwestern is a great school - more prestigious than where I went (and I landed in a BB).

Stay motivated, and land INTERVIEWS! Once you get to that stage, you have the ability to make impressions and earn an offer. If you have no confidence and need Yale as a crutch, then by all means whine about transferring...

And as for you h4zin, quality over quantity is key. Morningstar is a great piece, don't overextend yourself and sacrifice grades.

PLEASE DONT CHANGE EXCEL SHORTCUTS!!!

Just my opinion, but it sounds like you have plenty of activities, internships, etc - no reason to take this job unless you want to, and I'd be concerned about overextending myself (and not having any fun in college). If you intern during the summer, work at Morningstar, etc. you have more than enough on your resume to show interest. I agree that getting your GPA up is much more important.

Let me rephrase that for you because you clearly misunderstood:

"I ended up in BB not because I listened to the lies that they feed there to their students."

Does that make more sense now?

And I can't believe you got all riled up and went beyond one post to put up some pathetic apologist rant for your school. And kid, before you get all hot again and start jabbing away at the keyboard, look up what 'apologist' means.

With that kind of temperament and narrow worldview, even if you were to make it into a BB, you would never survive beyond your analyst years. More so than being smart and hardworking, you need to understand interpersonal politics. Anyone who has ever been a Greek in college knows that hands down.

Quite frankly, I bashed NU to see how you would react. Plenty of guys here are NU alums, including my officemate, I know.

You went on and on and on to match me point by point. So what? Am I now going to get spanked because I took your beanbag away on the playground? So you ran to mommy and told her about how I should "cut you some slack"? That line is just unforgettable. You could have just ignored my comment and took on the constructive ones. What does that say about you and your brittle ego? There are going to be plenty of days in your life and mine and everyone else's when some guy is going to give you a hard time for purposes of personal enjoyment and enlightenment. Are you going to tell them about Tyrell Sutton, too?

Lighten up 'cos I hear the weather is pretty shitty in Chi-town.

perhaps you're one to turn the other cheek, but im not going to sit back and be insulted for no reason whatsoever. its funny how you mock the fact that i got "all riled up" and "jabbed away at the keyboard" when you are the one who did it first, and now a second time. are you not getting staffed on any deals at your BB that you have the time to give college students a hard time "for purposes of personal enjoyment and enlightenment", on an online forum at that? maybe your MD tore you a new one today, and youre just paying it forward. whatever the case, there is no "interpersonal politics" between you and me, i dont have any reason to kiss your ass or take shit from you, but i do have reason to defend myself when being personally attacked.

next time, why dont you think of something constructive to say instead of taking out your repressed frustration. literally in all the posts ive read of yours, i dont think ive ever seen one iota of helpful advice. the most humiliating has got to be your asking for help on how to pick up girls at a bar in the "Monkeying Around" forum.

save your tattered reputation on this forum and keep your bitterness to yourself. and while youre at it, get a life... and a girl.

Well, I'm glad you listened and learned about "apologism". Too bad there doesn't seem to be a lot of discussion and learning in regards to your predicament. It seems to me that it is due your actions, not mine, that this post strayed away from you original question. When my post first went on, people continued to tell you about their thoughts, after your posts, this has just become a two-man dialogue about nothing.

I hope that after these 5-6 hours, you have received a great multitude of responses and a strong personal understanding in regards to whether you should take that Directorship with www.NUonlinebooks.com (whoops...how did I know about that?)

See it is like a game of politics, you take your move, I take mine ;) It is just monkey business.
